Q: Acid Reflux Diets - Home Diets To Keep Acid Reflux At Bay?
Just looking for 3-4 easy diet tips to prevent or treat acid reflux naturally. Information websites would also be helpful.

A: 1. Get yourself diets rich in complex carbohydrates (breads, rice and pasta). They fix the excess acid in your stomach and give you an easy feeling.

2. Rid yourself of high-fat foods. These tend to stay in the stomach longer, causing it to produce more acid for digestion.

3. Chew your foods well and don't rush on eating. 20 minutes for each meal is cool. Extract all the nutrients you can get from your diets.

4. Make sure to keep yourself in a straight position during and after eating, for least 45 minutes.

Q: Diets for people with acid reflux diesase?
My fiance` has just been diagnosed with acid reflux disease and has to change his whole diet. Any suggestions on where I can find information on what he can and can't eat, such as food lists?

A: I can only speak from personal experience. My boyfriend also has extreme issues with ARD. The only thing that has worked for him is the Atkins diet. Every time he goes on it (of course, he has a hard time staying on it for long) his symptoms disappear. And we're talking about someone who can't make it through one night's sleep without getting up to chew some Tums. Obviously, not official advice, but it's what has worked for him.

Q: Where can I find bland food diets for acid reflux?
I need names of good recipes or websites where I can find easy stuff to make bland meals for myself for my acid reflux problem.

A: I have acid reflux too and I don't follow a bland diet. I just avoid certain foods that will cause flares. Like chocolate, tomatoes, spices, coffee and tea unless decaffeinated. Also watch for fruit juices which contain a lot of acid. Other than those things you should be able to eat most anything. Also it is important to take over the counter medications daily like Pepcid , Tums and/or Prilosec these will help immensly and you may be able to eat some of the bad foods if you take them.

Q: My hubby suffers so bad with his acid reflux. He has lost lots of weight and needs to find out what will help.?
It gets hard for him to eat anymore.I am trying the acid reflux diet now.

A: I can soo help you. One day I woke up and could not swallow at all. After months and months and months 6 to be exact and 40 pounds lighter, 10 different meds, and thousand of doctor bills ....... I was given Nexium. I took about 3 more months for any type of relief. I would have him go to a gastro dr and discuss it.

Also this is very important. I lost my mind going throught this. Well not eating, but jello for 6 months did not help, but then the constant feeling like you were going to choke at any minute and going to die...I started having panic attacks. Then it became mild depression. There is a medical term for it. Something like: Depression and panic attacks brought on by a medical condition. Duh! I am now on Zoloft. I have been panic attack free for 1 year. I am so happy. I am able to eat almost anything and not worry.

I soooo understand how he feels. Please let him know that. You sound like my husband. No one would listen or help. He would lay in bed with me and cry with me. You have to be very very pushy with the doctors. I even went to another one, because the first one just wanted to put me on pills and more pills, but I guess the wrong one.

It is also important to know that this did not just come on. It has been happening for years and years. The top just finally came off. It will take time to heal. I would also suggest that he get a endosopy(misspelled sorry) done. They will put him to sleep and put a tube down his throat to see the damage. Just to make sure he does not have any other problems that Nexium will not fix.

One more thing. We did NOT have insurance. There are alot of programs out there to help. We had a clinic that I went through. It was really cheep and I then got sent to a specialist for hardly anything. Then you will have the endosopy done in the hospital and apply for assistance there too. Astra Zeneca pays for my Nexium. Then I went to the mental health for my Zoloft. I see the that doctor, now every 6 month for $5.00 a visit and my meds are $14 for a 3 months supply through K-Mart. You have to ask and search the internet.

I how that helps. Sorry for so much info. Maybe you can copy and paste this into a word doc and print it out. Be very persistant with everyone. It is a HUGE HUGE deal. He can die, not to scare you, but he can.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Q: Any suggestions for an acid reflux diet please!?
I am trying to loose weight but alot of foods and the moderation are really hard on my stomach with my acid reflux. Even if I take my reflux meds I still don't know what to eat.

Any suggestions?

A: Targetted weight reduction is quite difficult, some would declare impossible, however the one thing which definitely worked for me is wu-yi tea, it can be viewed in the resource box below, they have a limited number of free trials in stock, it has been featured in Fox News and CNN. I lost thrity pounds, it definitely does produce success!

Q: What can I eat when on a yeast free and lean meat diet? Acid reflux is bad and meds do not work. I am hoping?
if I go on this diet it will help. Any suggestions?

A: You can always eat fresh fruit and vegetables. However, don't eat citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits etc).

Q: acid reflux?
Would someone be so kind as to tell me which foods I should avoid while on the reflux diet.

A: You may try healing your acid reflux so you can eat anything you want. Prilosec taken for a full week helped me.

Then I found out about a natural cure, this works too. Potato juice (raw), put it in a blender, add a little water, then strain. You can add honey, it is bland. A juicer works well too.

Or

Cabbage juice is equally helpful in helping the body produce a protective coating to your stomach. Put it in a blender and strain, no need to add extra water. It is bland, almost no taste.

The third thing you can do is train the valve to stay closed. I got this from a doctor. First thing in the morning, drink 8 oz water on an empty stomach. Then raise up on your toes and set back down on your heels quickly, to make the stomach drop. Do this 11 times. It forces the valve at the neck of the esophagus closed. To see this work, fill a balloon with water and hold it by the neck, bounce it. Same principal.

Everyone had great ideas on foods to avoid, they are all true. But I could not live my life avoiding all the things I loved.

Just a final note: Stress reduces the body's ability to make that protective coating in the stomach. Relaxation helps the body get back in balance again. Try a massage if you can afford one.

Good luck!

Q: What kind of diet should I have with Acid Reflux?
I'm trying to control my reflux with diet only because I really dont want to take meds. They make me feel worse sometimes, stomach wise. How can I change my diet to help me. Or is there anything natural I can do? I did apple cidar vinegar(Organic) and it made it worse?

A: Eat smaller more frequent meals
Avoid fatty, fried, spicy foods; chocolate; mint; onions; garlic; carbonated drinks; caffeine; tomato sauce; alcohol.
Don't smoke
Loosen belt when eat.
Don't lie down after eating.
Elevate head of bed by about 6-8".
Keep a normal weight.
If you are taking certain meds it can make it worse, check with your MD.

Q: Acid reflux . . . .?
Has anyone successfully and (so far) permanently treated acid reflux through weight loss and improved diet? I don't want to be on a pill for the rest of my life.

Also, has anyone ever inhaled stomach acid? What was it like for you? Did you need immediate medical assistance?

A: The answer to your question is absolutely yes, acid reflux can be controlled with an improved diet - like you, I'm not interested in taking "a little purple pill" for the rest of my life and decided to figure out what was causing the problem. Caffeine is highly acidic, however I love coffee and couldn't imagine giving it up, so I simply reduced the number of cups I was drinking, and switched to a half & half blend (half decaf, half regular). I did not switch to a fat-free diet, however I reduced the amount of fats, meaning I stopped eating high fat cheeses and switched to "reduced fat" cheese, I stopped using oily salad dressings and instead, purchased light salad dressings ...etc. Also, I stopped eating at night (which is a good idea anyway). I stopped eating a few of the spicy dishes I used to enjoy, and found that I feel much better. As long as I follow these few guidelines, I am symptom-free, and do not need antacids or any medications.

Q: It's suggested I feed my lab a low fat low protein diet for acid reflux, any suggestions?
She's getting into her senior years and I'm not exactly strapped with cash.

Q: Acid Reflux?!?!??!????
im 14 and ive been getting heart burn for a long time and at one point when i was like 10 my esofogus( i dont kno how to spell) got really irratated and when i ate , it hurt. Now im sick and im burping the taste of rotten eggs and i have really bad diarhea. i constantly get heartburn for most things i eat or drink. when i drink apple juice or any type of juice i get it really bad. or maybe if i eat like frozen foods i might get it. now my mom is being really annoying and she just thinks that i need to change my diet but im telling her that i have acid reflux because i know that nobody i kno at my age has heartburn at all. but i get it all the time. so does it sound like a really have acid reflux? and also what things could i do about the heartburn?

A: I'm 18 and I started having acid reflux problems when I was a freshman in high school (14), so at least one other person had it at your age. My best advise would be go to a gastroenteritis which is a doctor that specializes in that type of stuff. He most likely will tell you to get an endoscopy and maybe a colonoscopy to make sure you don't have ulcers or permanent damage; and he will defiantly ask you to change your diet, at least for a few months. Until you go to the doctor, just take some kind of Anti-Acid before or after a meal and eat light. Don't eat things that are very acidic or too much food too fast, that also can cause acid reflux. Good luck, I know the pain sucks sometimes!

Q: vegeterian acid reflux diet... safe foods?
what is safe to eat? anyone have a list?

i think eating too much meat has been increasing symptoms so i want to go vegetarian for a while.

A: UMM if you dont like it dont answer loser.

Q: does anyone have any meal ideas as i have to eat a low fat diet for acid reflux?
acid or silent reflux needs a low fat diet - no pastries, cakes, chocolates, eggs, white wine or spirits, no cheese, butter,

A: I refuse to buy a cookbook since I found www.meals.com. On the left there is a dropdown menu that says "I am looking for..." and one of the choices is Lower in Fat Recipes. They have 145 easy to make recipes...so you can decide what you're hungry for!
And also...I found a great thing the other day. 1 banana, little bit of skim milk, 2 packets of equal, 3 ice cubes...throw it in a blender...you have a fat free milk shake. I also tried it with a handful of frozen rasberries (60 calories per serving...make sure you get them WITHOUT High Fructos Corn Syrup!!! This is the fat killer!). When I added rasberries, I put it in the freezer for a few minutes and it was thick...like ice cream!

Q: What foods should you eliminate from your diet if you have acid reflux disease?
What should you eat and drink?

A: Its often not what you are eating that causes foods reflux, it can just as easily be what you are not eating.

Foods you should try and include more of in your diet to reduce your heartburn are things like fruits and vegetables.

more details can be found here in the resources given below.

Q: Is it possible to cure acid reflux without meds?
I have SILENT REFLUX meaning it goes into my throat. But you can't feel it, and it's worse than acid reflux(GERD) But i really don't want to take medicine, is it true you can get rid of it by changing diets, and how you live rather than meds?

A: The main reason for any type of acid reflux is lack of digestive enzymes and low stomach acid. An old remedy still used to help with digestion is apple cider vinegar. Ginger is also another remedy to increase digestion. Heat destroys enzymes so eating a diet higher in raw foods (eg fruits, nuts) is benefical. Chewing more thoroughly is another way to break down food to help with the digestive process. Also, you can increase digestive enzymes in the diet with digestive enzyme supplements. They are made from plants and there are no side effects. These links go into further detail:
