Q: I know what foods to avoid, but would like a list of foods good to eat with a vegetarian diet for acid reflux.

A: There is many things, most vegetables are alright as with rice and such if done in moderation. The easiest thing for you to do would have smaller meals, that is what I do. If you eat smaller meals and have a few (5-7) it will allow you to have larger portions of things such as carbs.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

Q: When breastfeeding, are there any foods can cause acid reflux that I should avoid?
I have been told by several people to eat a very bland diet and then reintroduce to see what foods my baby may have reactions too.
I am looking for any foods that would cause the baby acid reflux.

A: The most likely offender is cow’s milk products (in baby’s or mom’s diet). Other things to ask yourself: is baby getting anything other than breastmilk – formula, solids (including cereal), vitamins (fluoride, iron, etc.), medications, herbal preparations? Is mom taking any medications, herbs, vitamins, iron, etc.?

Q: acid reflux?
Would someone be so kind as to tell me which foods I should avoid while on the reflux diet.

A: You may try healing your acid reflux so you can eat anything you want. Prilosec taken for a full week helped me.

Then I found out about a natural cure, this works too. Potato juice (raw), put it in a blender, add a little water, then strain. You can add honey, it is bland. A juicer works well too.

Or

Cabbage juice is equally helpful in helping the body produce a protective coating to your stomach. Put it in a blender and strain, no need to add extra water. It is bland, almost no taste.

The third thing you can do is train the valve to stay closed. I got this from a doctor. First thing in the morning, drink 8 oz water on an empty stomach. Then raise up on your toes and set back down on your heels quickly, to make the stomach drop. Do this 11 times. It forces the valve at the neck of the esophagus closed. To see this work, fill a balloon with water and hold it by the neck, bounce it. Same principal.

Everyone had great ideas on foods to avoid, they are all true. But I could not live my life avoiding all the things I loved.

Just a final note: Stress reduces the body’s ability to make that protective coating in the stomach. Relaxation helps the body get back in balance again. Try a massage if you can afford one.

Good luck!

Q: Healing foods for acid reflux- (from celiacs- and i do not eat acid causing foods)?
NO answer of foods to avoid thank you- I already know that!!!!

I was told by a Endoscopist that there are foods that can be eaten to help heal acid reflux- I have had celiacs disease for over 40 years
and due to that I got acid reflux- IT”S NOT FROM ACID CAUSING FOODS- but from the damage of celiacs- WHICH I AM ON A DIET FOR AND DOING WELL ON BUT STILL HAVE BAD ACID REFLUX- dr said it will take a long time to heal and that eating certain foods would help

I was told that I should eat foods that will help to heal it- he said even if I avoid acid causing foods that won’t help because it was caused by over 30 years of eating glutens- only found out in 2002 that i had celiacs.
He didn’t have a list of foods that can help to cure it- i do not eat spicy foods or drink caffeine, etc…
So what foods- OTHER THAN YOGURT- can i eat

I know people have healed their esphagus from eating foods but what did they eat?

or do you know of any websites that can help that have those foods listed
and i do not over-eat or eat too close to bed either
i have heard that apples can help but what else could
LisaRox5 you are truely awesome- finally a answer that deserves my praise LOL- thank you so much!!!! you are a blessing!!!!

Q: what diet is appropriate for someone who suffers from acid reflux?and esophagitis. ?
i need a list of what to eat foods and foods that has to be avoided.if possible give me a list of what kinds of foods.

A: I had been suffering really bad and discovered that I have an ulcer in the esophagus , my Doctor gave me an alkaline diet to follow and Proton pump inhibitors .After 2 months the symptoms didn’t improve so I carried on with the diet but separated the food groups as in food combining like (Hay diet ).My symptoms have greatly unproved , now im going to elevate my bed head ( using too many pillows just scrunches the stomach )and make sure I don’t go to bed after eating .I haven’t had any alcohol for a few months and I stay away from acidic foods.Good luck hope you get better soon and remember a lot of it can be trial and error.

Q: Need help with question about acid reflux and tums?
I found out in 2002 I have acid reflux- i avoid caffeine and when I have spaghetti i only use about 2 tbsp- 1/8 c sauce- always had liked just a little sauce. Anyway, I take protonix 2x a day because I have a ulcer (lots of stress going on) the ulcer is healing

my question is i also take tums and just wanted to know what peoples thoughts were on tums? I take the ultra strength 1000

I do avoid acid causing foods and drinks and
I do EXERCISE
this questions is about tums and nothing else- but if anyone wants to add info on other alternative ways to calm acid let me know

also I have acid reflux because i was born with celiacs disease- anyone who has it is born with it but develope it later on
My mom said I threw up my formula and all the times in my life I was sick we know why now- I found out in 2002 and it is what caused my acid reflux- years of eating what i shouldn’t- now i am on a strict gluten-free diet and I love it and even wrote my own cookbook
susiecat- thank you- you are a doll!
baking soda is ok but i am 40 amd tums is better because it has calcium- any extra calcium is good- esp since bone degeneration may run in the family
lyric- keep your site to yourself- stop solicitng on Y!A

A: I do not have the medical history you do, but I do have acid reflux! (It was definitely diagnosed as GERD)
I have been on Prilosec for quite a few years – but sometimes, I have breakthrough acid.
My gastroenterologist said it is perfectly safe to use Tums now and then (avoid any that have the ingredient sorbitol (this can cause digestive problems of its own.) Some forms of Tums, I believe have sorbitol)
Stress and anxiety can cause extra acid – and you have to try to reduce these conditions (not easy)
Everything you are doing is very positive – and I applaud you for your efforts.
Other than, Tums won’t hurt you, I can’t really offer anymore suggestions.
You sound like you are doing everything right.
It wouldn’t hurt to ask your doctor about the Tums – Just to be on the safe side.
TakeCare!

Q: What is good for a breastfeeding mother to eat if her infant has acid reflux?
My daughter is 4 weeks old and has acid reflux and I feel like I am starving. Can anyone give me ideas on what I can eat, I am currently avoiding dairy and citrus foods. So I am eating potatoes, bread, pasta and pears. So if anyone has been thought on this and can give me an idea of a diet that would be great. Seriouse answers only please, thanks.

A: Unfortunately, it is trial and error. Every baby is different. Just like what causes you heartburn won’t affect someone else, and vice versa. I had to stay away from anything that had tomatos when I breastfed my daughter. I couldn’t eat pizza, marinara sauce, chili, no raw tomatoes, cooked tomatoes, etc. Experiment with foods. Eat bland plain foods for 2 out of 3 meals until you can pinpoint what in the “3rd” meals is causing her acid reflux to flare up.

Q: Foods that neutralize stomach acid?
I am on acid-free diet so i can cure my acid reflux and heal my esphogas
But since I’ve had acid reflux for over 40 years just avoiding foods isn’t helping and
I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE DRUGS-
i heard papaya neutralizes stomach acid
is there any other foods or healthy drinks you know that do

i avoid caffeine- never drink the stuff anyway- and sodas and fatty food, etc…
the problem is milk make mucus so not sure that’s the best to take like before bed- but thanks i will try it during the day
i can’t eat crzckers much i have celiacs- so i eat gluten-free pretzels- i have noticed i lost a little weight since i started my acid-free diet- since i have to avoid fats

A: I know that milk helps your throat after you’re refluxed…

A: tums

Q: I am really desperate for a heartburn remedy!! How can I change my diet and help it go away?
So I’m sick of taking tums in mass quantities all the time. I know my heartburn usually comes from drinking too much coffee, and sometimes I am more successful at restraining myself.

I don’t like taking medications like Zantac or Pepcid…I am looking for a soothing drink that would help my throat/chest.

Also, what foods should I definitely avoid to reduce acid reflux?

A: Hello. If you know your heartburn comes from drinking to much coffee, and you can’t control yourself,, maybe you should try switching to decaf. My grandmother used to take 1 tsp of baking soda and put it in about a half a glass of water, and she swore by it. She had a hyadal hernia and she had AR really bad. And it tastes about like an Alka Seltzer. Some things that may sooth your stomach are, pineapple, banana’s, and believe it or not a tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water with a tbsp of honey. And if I were you, I would go to the doctor and talk to him about this. I don’t mean to scare you, but when I was in my 30’s I had heart burn and acid reflux all the time. I had a massive heart attack when I was 37. And my doctors told me that heart burn is a warning sign. So just to be on the safe side,, why don’t you make an appt to go see your doctor and ask him about this. It won’t hurt and could very well save your life. Don’t take any chances. Please go get checked out. My prayers will be with you. I hope this helped.

Q: Gallbladder Problems or something else? How do I counteract too much calcium in my diet?? Magnesium?
I have been experiencing gallstone like symptoms for 1.5 yrs now. I thought I was going to die the first time I had one. Immediately, the 1st thing the doctors wanted to do when I had pain in my midsection was call it acid-reflux and gave me antacid. When that didn’t work, they quickly switched to gallstones and said I had to have it removed immediately before it damaged my pancreas. They said to avoid fatty foods in the meantime. While I am thinking it over I ran into many MANY people who had problems/pain/cancer in less than 5 years after the operation, so I held off and tried to change my diet – with much success! With I still can’t eat non-fatty foods like lettuce, nuts, skin of an apple, etc…..I can easily digest items like cheese pizza, ice cream, and cheese quesedillas. It doesn’t make any sense. Personally, I think the food industry putting CALCIUM in our food is causing so many people to have this problem (I’m 30 and male). How does one counteract too much calcium??

A: Just go have your gallbladder removed it is the best thing i ever had done and the easiest surgery i had done. i felt sooo much better. you need to stay off caffeine, did they warn you about that? you might also have gone into pancreatitis. go have your blood sugar tested. take care of yourself.

Q: I am pregnant with twins and have heartburn that doesn’t respond to anything…help?
I am 4 months pregnant with twins and I have heartburn/indigestion/acid reflux that I can’t seem to get under control.

Tums, Zantac and Tagamet seem to make it worse. I have tried enzymes with food and chewable enzymes after food. I have modified my diet to avoid all foods indicated in heartburn. I have tried acupuncture. The only thing that slightly helps are ginger chews. But, doesn’t completely help.

I have lost 5 pounds since I got pregnant and I know I am supposed to gain more weight early on because I am having twins. And I can’t even imagine how I could get 3500 calories in per day.

HELP! Any advice would be welcome.

A: I had such painful heartburn with both my sons. My doctor prescribed Nexium- and it worked wonders!!

In a pinch a squeeze of yellow mustard helped, but only temporarily!

Hang in there! I promise when this is over you won’t remember how awful you feel right now!

Q: Nausea, Throat tightening?
Recently have been experiencing nausea & throat tightening.

For the past year have had GERD/Acid reflux symptoms

Have taken proper precautions (avoided fatty, acidic foods, tight clothing, raised bed – everything suggested)

Im currently taking 20mg Pantoprazole and 10mg Metaclopromide (occasionally for nausea)

Can anyone suggest anything this could be as I don’t have a clear diagnosis that this is actually GERD.

Ive had so many different symptoms, that seem to come and go. I was fine for a few months and now all of a sudden the nausea has come back. Im not pregnant. It seems to happen in the evening, im generally ok in the daytime. Im trying to avoid taking my anti-emetic medication as this makes me very tired & have a 4yr to run around.

Im awaiting an endoscopy. Im just kind of at the end of my tether. Because Ive had this problem for a while, ive cut so much out of my diet and had to put so much of my life on hold because ive felt so ill at times. Suggestions?

A: Hi, there. Your symptoms certainly fit into the GERD pattern. I was taking Prevacid and found it to be much more effective than Nexium. The previous poster had an awesome answer about drinking the apple cider vinegar. It does work! If drinking that makes your nausea worse, try adding 4-6 tblsp of Aloe Vera Juice to the blend. I drink aloe vera juice daily and never have any symptoms. I don’t even have to watch my diet anymore!! It is also possible that you have a food allergy. You will probably have to go to an Integrative MD or a Naturopath to get food allergy tests done. I will warn you in advance that an endoscopy does not always show signs of GERD, even in people who have severe symptoms. When my GERD was its worst, I was vomiting at least six times a day and had unbearable acid pain in my stomach. My endoscopy looked gorgeous and clear. (LOL … I know because I woke up in the middle of it and got to watch the rest! uggghhh!!) My Integrative MD said that endoscopies rarely show anything but the most severe damage. I just want to warn you about that in advance because I KNOW how frustrating it can be to be unable to function but have tests come back perfectly normal.

So … start drinking the water with apple cider vinegar and start drinking a glass of water with aloe vera juice mixed in frequently throughout the day. The aloe vera juice will not only reduce the acid levels in the stomach, but will actually soothe and help heal any damage done by the GERD. I have also found that taking an Essential Enzyme supplement before every meal and/or taking a combined Papain/Bromelain supplement helps. If nothing else, my doctor gave me permission to take Gavascon Extra (the kind that states on the box it’s ok to take with GERD meds). It works well, although I haven’t had to take it in months. I KNOW how miserable you are. Please hang in there and know that there is a cure. I wish you the best of luck!

Q: Stomach Problems PLEASE help me! If you are a doctor or you know help.?
Okay so for few months now I been having a bunch of stomach problems….
Bloating
Soar throat
pressure on my chest
chest pain
I feel shortness of breath
I feel my stomach is heavy
heartburn
I feel a little better after a bowl movement
cough… (few times a day)
sometimes when I feel like i am about to burp and I don’t… it makes the pressure on my chest worse.
I feel hungry even when I am done eating, even though my stomach feels kind of full.
My doctor thought it can be acid reflux and he gave me acid reducer few weeks ago; It did no good.
I did feel acid come up like twice before.
I eat a healthy diet. A lot of fruits, vegetables, and organic foods.
I try to avoid white bread, chocolates… and junk food.
I don’t know why this is happening. I don’t feel comfortable at all.

I am 127 pounds, 5,6 tall, female, 18 years old.
Help me please.

A: A lot of your symptoms does sound like GERD, You said that the doctor prescribed you some acid reducers and that it didn’t work. Has he tried more than one? If not, it’s possible he hasn’t been able to find the right one for you yet. I had to try several before I got the right one. Plus, I have to take my twice daily in order to control my GERD. Also, try elevating the headboard of your bed when you sleep by about 4 inches, that helps to keep the foods from coming back up in the throat as you sleep.

You say you eat a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables and eat a lot of organics. I have found that there are a lot of fruits and vegetables that cause my symptoms to worsen. You might want to keep a food diary to see what happens when you eat certain foods. I love, apples and oranges, but if I eat even just one, I have so much pain and pressure that it’s unreal. I have had to totally give them up. Plus, if you drink a lot of caffeinated beverages, or sodas too, those all also play a major role in the discomfort.

Even though I have found a medication that works for me, there are still times when the symptoms get worse. On those days, I will take Maalox Max chewable tablets over the counter. I also take gas pills as I need them to help relieve the pressure and bloating.

I would go back to the Gastoenterologist and see if there is anything else that they can do to help you. You didn’t say if your have ever had an EGD. The scope down the throat into the stomach and small intestine. I also had to have an Endoscopic camera planted into my stomach, it records what happens as it passes through the digestive system. Then it passes through the system entirely. After I had that and went back for my followup with the Gastro doctor, that’s when they determined that I needed to take my mediciations twice daily instead of the usually prescribed once daily.

I hope this information has helped you. I certainly hope that you get feeling better soon. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Q: How much does health cost?
I have had pain that “legal drugs” never helped with – at that time I had become disenchanted with how they wouldn’t give me the drugs to numb me, and what I was getting wasn’t enough to take the pain away. So… I dumped what I had left of the “legal drugs” into my trustworthy toilet and flushed them away, and embarked on serious detox, to rid my body of whatever was hurting it (and hopefully the toxins causing my pain would flush away – if possible – or at least putting my body at it’s optimum to heal me). It was promising from the beginning, I did the “lemonade diet” for 30 days and was impressed on the 5th day how my pain lessened considerably. Through the year I did 2 more 30 day detox “lemonade diet” (restricted diets/fasts) and cured myself of my FMS and an extra bonus was getting rid of my acid reflux. During this whole time I ate organic foods and living foods (foods activated into growing <- I ate those like crazy, my body wanted it sooo badly - craving heathy foods?? I was impressed). Now I still get into these healthy food fits and buy up a whole lot of organic veggies (usually the cheaper ones in harvest or on sale - whatever they may be), and cut them into small chunks, barely steam them, if at all and toss in some virgin olive oil and lemon and herbs (FYI: anything cooked over 105 degrees kills the food enzymes that cure you), and I can't stop myself from gobbling it up through out the day. My depression also left me as soon as I stopped eating processed food that was processed. One way to see it is like this: IF you go to the STORE and see STORED FOOD ("store" being the operative word here), AVOID IT! Eat fresh, stay alive!

Try to eat healthy (avoid those “healthy foods” that are stored in the store !! Again, “store” = “stored food”). AVOID foods in plastic wraps (unless kept frozen from the factory) – especially bread, they are INFESTED with mold, probably the biggest precursor to our health problems as it disengages our immune system immediately)

Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you, think and eat for yourself, certainly you have a vested interested in your health and being at your optimal !!

A: way to go!
