Q: What is best medication for acid reflux / Gerd?
I, and alot of people I know, suffer from chronic bouts of acid reflux, Gerd and various acute stomach disorders. What I want is something that provides IMMEDIATE RELIEF and something that is LONG-LASTING meaning that by merely using this product/medication I will get incrementally better. Is there any product out there (besides Tums, Mylanta, Prilosec and Nexium) that can provide instant relief and be curative? Thanks to all of you for your time.
A: Forget Prevacid. Prevacid actually is bad for you in the long run as it will produce brittle bones. For anyone wanting to do research and understand acid reflux / GERD, go to the CNN website and under the Health Tab you’ll see videos on acid reflux and GERD: http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/healthology/. Having said all this, there is a new all-natural medication out there called STOMACIN-U: www.stomacin-u.com. I’ve tried this and it works great! It’s effects are immediate and the benefits seem to be cumulative! My friends have used it also and they swear by it. We’ve all thrown out our other otc medications and actual prescription medications. They can’t touch Stomacin-U. Consider that it has NO SIDE EFFECTS as do the other medicines out there. Try it and you’ll be glad. Your reflux problems will be over!
Q: How can you tell the difference between GERD/acid reflux symptoms and a problem with the aorta?
I’ve had sharp, stabbing pains in the upper stomach area (and a multitude of other symptoms) for a few months now and they seem to be getting worse. How can I differentiate between GERD or acid reflux type symptoms, and something like aortic stenosis or an aortic dissection.
A: I’m not sure but if you find out let me know
I have had a constant full feeling in my upper stomach over the last few days and its doing my head in. I haven’t got much of an appetite but feel full, had a dodgy stomach a week ago. I went to my gp and he has given me some Merbentyl as he said it should settle things down and he thought it was just a bug that i have but i’m not convinced.
Q: What are the best home remedies for acid reflux/GERD?
I have severe acid reflux and am taking prescription medicine for it, but it hasn’t helped. what are some home remedies I could take, like food, or liquids?
A: Have you cut all milk products from your diet? A lot of adults cannot handle milk products and they will make your symptoms worse. I would suggest that you try probiotics. This are the active cultures in yogurt. I know I said no milk products, but actually yogurt has been cultured so may not cause you problems. Or you can just take a probiotic pill. They are available at the health food stores.
A non-caffeinated carbonated drink will sometimes help, but you will have to see, some people it makes it worse. I would also try to eliminate as much caffiene as possible. Could be aggravating your symptoms.
Q: What health-food stores are good for people with acid reflux/GERD?
I have a condition called GERD that is causing me a lot of pain and discomfort and I am looking for something that will help ease it by eating foods that acually help me instead of cause more pain. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank You and God Bless;)
A: Well i have GERD or Acid reflux disease also & if your wondering what foods make it better i can help you out with that.1st off you CANNOT eat any spicy foods you have to eat blan stuff for a while such as crackers & applesauce & vegetables & stuff like that but when u get discomfort try eating some crackers it works for me because the crackers kind of absorb some of the acid. But you have to be on a diet for a while no spicy foods,no citric acids such as orange juice because that can make it worse,& you aren’t suppose to eat until you get full you have to eat in portions. If you have anymore ?’s feel free to email me.Hope I helped
Q: How can i get rid of acid reflux/ GERD?
I have been using many medications and prescriptions from my doctor and i seem to be getting no where.
A: diet has alot to do with it……if you are not willing to change your diet, try prilosec daily – or if it’s only every now and then, try gaviscon chewables
Q: Is there any connection between acid reflux (GERD) and gluten intolerance or Celiac disease?
Please cite your sources. I’m also interested to know if going on a gluten-free diet could help eliminate my acid reflux (if it turns out that I am gluten intolerant).
A: I think there is. I have GERD and bread always aggravates it. I too am being tested for Celiac in a couple of weeks.
Good luck and Happy eating to us both.
Q: Can acid reflux(GERD) lead to any kind of serious conditions?
I have acid reflux and every now and then it acts up. I am told to take my Nexium when it does this or if I know I’ll be eating food or drinking alcohol that will irritate this.
This doesn’t happen to me often and since I’ve been on the Nexium it’s been controlled pretty well but I am wondering if these sporadic outbursts are bad for me in that they could lead to some kind of more serious medical condition or disease.
Thanks
A: Occasional bouts of reflux are not harmful.
Frequent reflux can lead to a host of complications including a condition called Barrett’s esophagitis, which involves permanent changes in the cells lining the esophagus as they attempt to protect themselves from damage (over years of exposure to chronic acid.)
These cellular changes, called metaplasia, mean that cells which would not normally be dividing and replicating will then begin to do so on a chronic basis. Over further years all of this cell division increases the risk of a mistake in division, called a mutation, being made one day, and this can lead to esophageal cancer.
Therefore chronic GERD increases risk of esophageal cancer.
Nexium belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which are the “latest thing” and are very effective at shutting down acid production in the gut. Recent data from studies of long term use of PPIs has raised the question of whether there may be some associated decrease in bone mineralization as a side-effect. For that reason the older style medications (called H2 blockers) like Zantac (ranitidine) are coming back into favor. They are slightly less effective in general but they are MUCH cheaper, available without prescription, and have no potential risk of bone loss. If they work for you to relieve your symptoms, as they do for many people, they may be a better choice in the long run.
This would be a good topic to discuss with your doctor.
Q: Has anyone suffering from acid reflux/GERD found a way to relieve the symptoms?
Nexium and other meds have started to lose effectiveness, and the doctors seem to be out of options
A: The best option, my friend, is to address the root of the problem. Nexium and other prescriptions only MASK the symptoms you are feeling. They do NOTHING to heal the problem that your body is trying to tell you about. In your particular case it’s probably acidosis.
Acidosis is a condition when the body becomes too acidic. Each of your body fluids has a very specific pH, or acid/alkaline level, that it needs to stay within. Your body has methods to keep the body fluids at the correct pH, but if we continue to indulge in an unhealthy diet and lifestyle choices, the bodys resources run thin and we tend to become too acidic. Many chronic, degenerative diseases form in an overly acidic body. For example, cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline body, only an overly acidic environment spurs these cells to grow.
I used to suffer from acid reflux as well. I barely slept during severe bouts and when I did I had to sleep sitting straight up in a chair or I would wake up with acid burning my throat. It was not fun. I am now acid reflux free, and I would be happy to share my protocol with you.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to DRINK MORE WATER. WIthout knowing your name or a single thing about your daily habits, I know you are dehydrated. Discontinue drinking anything but pure water. Definitely don’t drink alcohol or coffee. Not only are they not water, but they are diuretics, meaning they will draw even more water out of your body. This goes for tea as well.
Try this method:
Upon awakening, drink a glass (8 ounces) of water you have at your bedside. Set it there the night before so you won’t forget. Then, get up and make yourself another glass of water. Drinking your morning water will flush the kidneys and help rehydrate them as they become dehydrated while you sleep. It also prepares the digestive tract for the first meal.
Throughout the rest of the day, gradually drink at least 6 more glasses of water. If you try to chug all your daily water in a short period of time, it will pass right through you rather than re-hydrating your tissues. Try to add lemon to your water as it will help alkalize your body. It seems backwards, but even though lemons are sour and acidic tasting, they have an alkalizing effect in the body.
I also recommend you add 1/4 teaspoon of good quality sea salt to each quart (4 glasses) of water. If you already eat a diet high in salt, you may not need this. However, if you make the recommended dietary changes, you will need this salt to keep your electrolytes balanced.
Speaking of dietary changes, you will need to make some. All foods are either acid-forming, alkaline-forming or neutral. I suspect most of the foods you are eating are acid forming. These foods throw off the pH balance in the body and can lead to acid reflux and other digestive problems. Begin consuming more fresh, alkaline forming foods and you will find your digestive problems (and a host of other health issues) will begin to heal.
It is also possible that you are suffering from a deficiency of hydrochloric acid in your stomach. In other words, you don’t have ENOUGH acid. Don’t worry, this is simple to fix. You will still want to drink your water and eat your alkalizing foods. However, you will also want to add Braggs apple cider vinegar to your diet to assist with digestion.
The acidity of vinegar is a panacea to those who don’t make enough HCI in their bellies. As you may have guessed, it also has an alkalizing effect once digested, even though it tastes sour. You will also want to consume cultured foods like Kombucha (a drink), kefir (like yogurt, only turbo charged) and cultured veggies like kimchee, miso and tempeh at each meal. This will help digestion by adding probiotics and enzymes that you desperately need.
Additionally, cayenne pepper stimulates the secretion of HCI (stomach acid) and can help with the digestion of protein. If you feel you are running low on stomach acid, try adding a little cayenne to your meals. If it does not agree with you or makes your symptoms worse, discontinue use.

Q: Do you know of any medical studies that show a relationship between gerd/acid reflux and anti-inflammatories?
I am in need of any medical/journal/tests results that can provide some proof that anti-inflammatories can cause heart burn and/or acid reflux, etc?
A: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&ei=kimMSZ3nJOCbtwfNwLiiCw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=clinical+research+anti+inflammatories+and+GERD&spell=1
Hope this helps. Do you mean NSAIDS or drugs like prednisone, cytoxin, rituxin, and immuran?
Q: Could prescription severe acid reflux (GERD) medicines possibly mask the symptoms of stomach cancer?
Prescriptions such as Prevacid, Nexium, and Prilosec.
A: I hope not, but then again any type of prescription medication has side effects with other parts of the body. Make sure you find out for sure if those medications you take causes stomach cancer.
Just keep in mind that pharmaceutical companies & doctors are not God. 8-D
Q: what are the symptons of acid reflux, GERD or colic?
everytime i feed my 2 month old daughter, she would poop right away while im feeding her or after…the doctor said it’s pretty normal…i’m just a little bit concerned.
A: From what your doctor said yeah it may be normal, but my brother’s daughter is breast feed and she poops alot. Believe me its not from acid reflux (I think she is too young to have that), GERD (never heard of it), and colic (I had colic when I was a baby and I think thats when your gassy all the time and I cried non-stop from what my mom said and they had to drive me around the block just to get me to sleep).
Q: If you have GERD, (Acid Reflux) Can you eat cereal, Like Special K and Oatmeal Crisp?
I am a big cereal eater but I haven’t in the last few days since I realized I have GERD (Acid Reflux), I know those cereal have quite a bit of sugar and they say that sugar makes GERD worse…Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
A: Those are good cereals. Not too much sugar. Don’t lay down for at least a half hour after eating. Also, any good doctor who gives you the GERD diagnosis should have told you to raise the head of your bed 6 inches. It’ll make all the difference in the world.
Bless you and good luck!!
Q: Should I take Benzonatate (aka. Tessalon Perles) for cough brought on by acid reflux/GERD?
I have been having this dry cough for several years now, there is no phlegm accompanying the cough, and the coughs almost always start at the end of a meal. Would it help to take Benzonatate (aka. Tessalon Perles) for this cough? What are the side effects, if any?
A: A diet too high in animal protein, processed sugar, caffeine, processed foods will disrupt the precious alkaline balance in your system and eventually produce degeneration and disease.
i’m sorry i have no knowledge of the Benzonatate ……….. my rule of thumb when i’m putting something into my mouth is that if i can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is i don’t eat it or drink it.
your acid reflux is a symptom of bad digestion and I suggest it would be preferable to include more alkaline foods in your daily routine such as leafy and green vegies like broccolli, kale, chard, celery, buk choy, lemons, garlic etc.etc……… with the lemons, even though they are quite tart and acidic to taste they leave behind an ash residue that is very alkaline ………. you would need to rinse your mouth out thoroughly to protect the enamel on your teeth after eating the fruit or drinking the diluted lemon juice……….. all these foods will increase the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy thus aiding in the digestive process and helping to smooth elimination.

cut back on milk and dairy products too for a few days and see if that alleviates the problem ……. many people are intolerant to the lactose or casein found in milk and dairy products and therefore don’t efficiently digest them.
leafy and green vegies are very rich in calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, fibre and are far easier for your body to assimilate.
peace baby

Q: How can I drink alcohol with Gerd/Acid Reflux?
I have been diagnosed with GERD and I rarely drink. But tomorrow is a big party and I would like to drink. I won’t drink anymore then probably 5-6 beers, I am a light weight. I’ve drank in the past and I woke up in the middle of the night with horrible stomach pain, but it passes. Can I take a Ranitidine ( A.K.A. Zantac) will that help? Please help
A: My boyfriend has the same problem except he drinks hard liquor. sometimes the ranitidine helps and sometimes it doesn’t. I would strongly suggest you don’t drink at all OR limit your beers to 1/2 of what you usually drink. Make sure you take 2 pills and maybe take it early to get it in your system (at least an hour before you start). Happy partying!
Q: Does anyone have any good recipes for someone who has acid reflux/GERD?
Specifically, no food prepared with any tomato derivatives,no spicy, hot dishes, no fried food dishes, no chocolate dishes all of these things trigger an Acid Reflux Attack Thanx
Yuuuch!!!!
A: I have acid reflux bad, so I had to drastically change my diet too. I started doing casseroles with cream soups, lean meats, etc. I also started eating alot of fresh fruits and veggies (no orange juice!) stay away from tea, coffee, high fat stuff, tomato stuff.
For a great dessert: take a package of one step angel food cake mix (make sure it says one step on the package or this wont work) and put it in a large bowl. Add one 22 oz. can of crushed pineapple and mix with a spoon until blended.
pour into a greased casserole sized pan and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, or until light brown and cooked through. Serve with cool whip. This is non fat, low in calories and tastes great.
Good luck to you. It get’s better with medicine and diet changes, I swear!
