Q: Can you have acid reflux without heartburn?
I am planning on seeing my doctor, but lately I’ve been having trouble falling asleep because of what I think may be acid reflux. The symptoms are very subtle. I have either no heartburn, or very little heartburn. I usually experience the feeling of acid coming up right as I’m about to lose consciousness (half asleep). If I’m laying down fully awake, no problems. It’s only when I’m about to fall asleep. It also doesn’t seem to wake me up when I am asleep.
Also, must an endoscopy always be performed to diagnose this?
A: The type of night time acid reflux is not uncommon. It can be a dangerous condition so you should take it seriously. However, there are may steps that you can take without needing to see a doctor:
Here are a few helpful tips:
1. Don’t eat within 2-3 hours of bed time.
2. Don’t drink alcoholic beverages within 6 hours of bed time.
3. Take an antacid such as Tums or Rolaids before bed.
4. Consider an acid reducer such as Zantac before bed.
5. Put blocks under the head of your bed to raise it 4 inches.
6. Avoid Caffeine 6-8 hours before bed time.
regarding the endoscopy, I think the answer depends on your doctor. I was treated with medication for years before I had to have an endoscopy done.
Q: Acid Reflux/Heartburn During Period/Menstruation?
With my last two periods, I have been experiencing a horrible acid reflux/heartburn feeling in the pit of my stomach and lower esophagus – in the middle of my body, under my breast bone. At this time I also experience what I can only describe as hunger pangs/pains. I “feel” like I need to eat something all the time even though I am not hungry or have just eaten.
My diet is not altered during these times and the problems start right as my menstrual cycle starts. I have been drinking a lot of water to combat this problem as well as trying TUMS, nothing has helped.
Has this happened to any of you, and if so how do you treat it?
NOTE: I have no symptoms of acid reflux/heartburn etc. after my period has ended.
I have googled it. . . I found no help. Seems this problem is common during pregnancy, possibly due to hormones.
A: google it

Q: Anyone ever take Protonix for acid reflux?
Did it make you nauseous?
I read it’s one of the more common side effects, but I’ve never experienced side effects from medicine before. Nausea is my main acid reflux symptom, not heartburn, so I can’t tell if the medicine is working or not.
A: PPI’s usually take few weeks to work anyway.. so talk to your doctor and ask them what they think ..
Q: Heartburn-like symptoms?
I’m 46, in good shape, not overweight, with no historry of digestive or heart disease or cancer in my family.
For several months, and increasingly in the last 2 months, I’ve had what feels a lot like heartburn/acid-reflux. About 5 weeks ago, I had a pain in my chest so bad around the esophagal/heart area it felt like I was having a heart attack!
I don’t think it’s heart-related, but I’m just saying, the pain was that severe.
I saw a family physician twice the last week of August, and he put me on nexium, for 30 days, which I just ceased taking at his recommendation, 3 days ago).
Nexium LIMITED the pain, but did not eliminate it. I still had a dull ache around the esophagal area, although lessened by Nexium. My Dr said if it was acid reflux, that would definitely have eliminated it, so that eliminates that. He also tested me for the bacteria that causes ulcers, and I tested negative for that.
I didn’t like taking nexium, it made me feel like I was on the edge of being incontinent, and I had loose bowel movements and headaches the whole month I was on it.
My doctor initially had me on Nexium for 2 months, but said if it wasn’t helping after 30 days, I might as well discontinue it.
My Dr also gave me an EKG to test for potential heart problems, and that showed no signs of heart trouble.
He also did bloodwork, and the only bad sign was my cholesterol was 238, which he advised me to get down, and I’ve almost completely given up meat and dairy to make an immediate improvement in that.
I’m 5′ 11″, 180 lbs, in good shape, with no physical problems otherwise.
I usually feel indigestion and chest pain/acid-reflux-like symptoms 2 to 3 hours after I eat, and often releive the pain/pressure by pressing on points of my upper pectoralis muscles, and burping (as quietly as I can). I think it could possibly just be gas pain, but it seems my esophagus or something else is inflamed.
I burp, quietly, sometimes 100, 200 or more times. And I don’t want to, but it seems to be the only thing that releives the pressure and pain, at least partially. Sometimes I press on my pectoralis points till my chest is black and blue (although not often) to releive the pressure.
I work as a massage therapist, and so have a very physical job. I’m in discomfort, but –so far— it does not impair my ability to work. Although sometimes I’m at the upper threshold of pain I can comfortably work with.
It often helps me to work rather than sit at my desk, because then I’m flexing my chest muscles, and that relieves and stretches it.
I also feel frequent itching/irritation around my tonsils and the back of my throat, possibly related to irritation of my esophagus.
I’ve never felt nausea, vomiting or vomiting blood, which I’ve seen are symptoms of esophagal cancer. My doctor says based on what he’s seen so far, he doesn’t think it’s heart disease or any kind of cancer. But this ongoing inflammation can’t be good.
The only other health problem I have is mild allergies, although I’m extremely allergic to mold, and that can irritate my throat and make it burn, especially when air conditioning first comes on and kicks up dust in the vents. And when I’m outside near a canal or other place where mold grows abundantly. But that is largely controllable.
I’m concerned because the chest pain has kicked up considerably in the last 6 weeks.
I’m also currently uninsured, although I make about 30,000 annually and can for the first time in my life afford insurance. I’m concerned if I see a gastro-enterologist, he’ll just say “Sorry, nothing I can do, 300 dollars please”.
Or if it is a serious medical condition, they’ll deny me coverage and say it’s a pre-existing condition.
I also have no idea how to find a good insurance provider.
Please advise me, what you think it is, and how it can be treated and eliminated. Thank you !
The most persistent symptom is chest pain, centered around the third rib, just to the left of my sternum, and tightness in my chest muscles on the same point and 2-inch radius around it.
For maybe a year, I only felt it after I ate, about 2 to 3 hours after eating. But the last 5 weeks, I feel it pretty much from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep, more inflamed when I eat.
I notice no symptoms of fatigue or sweating to indicate heart problems. And again, I had an EKG 1 month ago that indicated no heart problems.
A: Possibly a hiatal hernia. Please check your local area for free clinics, or go to your church and ask for help. Often they can assist.
Q: How can I have acid reflux and have no symptoms?
I recently had an Upper GI and was told I have acid reflux but I don’t have any symptoms. I’ve had heartburn occasionally…once in a blue moon kinda thing. Should I start taking something for it?
A: I’m going through the exact same thing right now actually. I’ve been having acid reflux and not knowing it. I went to the doctors and my doctor told me that the acid from my stomach was actually making the back of my throat peel. Gaviscon works really well with heartburn.
Q: Is heartburn or acid reflux like pain a symptom of pregnancy?
also…. if the pregnancy would only be about a week and a half or two weeks, would this show that soon?
i didn’t think a test would show a positive yet… i hadn’t really even considered the possibility of being pregnant until right now… i’m only asking because i did have unprotected sex & i’ve never had this pain before ever. weird coincidence maybe??
A: Heartburn is one symptom quite a few women deal with during pregnancy. However, for you I don’t believe that is the case. You wouldn’t be having symptoms this soon. It’s not likely you’ve even had a positive test yet.
Q: Symptoms???
Im looking for a different opinion of that of my doctor. I’d just like to know if someone is presenting symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, chest pain, nausea, slight wheezing, some difficulty swallowing, gas, bloating. What would the diagnosis be.
Just asking because these are all symptoms i’ve had since May last year and im only now being given a barium meal despite going to doctors twice a week practically and being put on loads of different pills.
A: ok acid reflux will cause heartburn which will after a long time cause chest pain nausea, gas bloating now the swallowing i think is the acid has burnt your throat it can cause a slight wheezing you still have acid reflux.
Q: Is this GERD / acid reflux Symptoms?
Hello, i wonder if burping all the time and a warm full feeling in the back of your throat when burping could be acid reflux? I am pregnant and have had a sore throat for a while and excessive mucus in my throat, and contstant throat clearing. been to the docs and he says its Acid reflux but i dont get heartburn so i am confused
xx
A: My Dad has this condition and he never got heartburn at all. Worse; he had great difficulty in swallowing as the years went by, and could only do so after taking some sort of muscle relaxant. Listen to your doctor on this one
Good luck…
Q: How to cure my acid reflux?
I went to Tahiti six months ago and ever since then I have had what I think is acid reflux. Before traveling, it never happened.
It’s a tingling unpleasant feeling in my chest, and it mainly happens when I’m lying down to sleep-when I sit up it isn’t so bad. Weirdly, it’s mainly when I’m about to go to sleep that it happens. Which is annoying. Every now and then it will get VERY bad, along with a sore stomach. I never seem to vomit, though there’s been some near misses.
When I went to the doctor he said I had irritable bowel syndrome.
So does it sound like acid reflux is my problem? If so what could help alleviate it? And is there a link between IBS symptoms and heartburn/acid reflux?
Thanks so much for any ideas-it’s much appreciated.
A: Everything you have explained I have had , my Doctor stopped my medication 2 months ago so I have to control the acid with diet .
I cant eat any tomato based food , fried stuff , white bread , alcohol , red meat , salmon , sodas, no cereals only oats with skimmed milk and many more. What I have is an alkaline diet (there are plenty on line) and I feel much better but not cured .
I was told I would probably have to eat like this for th rest of my Life .
One good thing for me is that I have lost 45 pound without even trying because of the type of food and the small quantity in each meal .I don’t eat anything after 6 o’clock at night ,I eat slowly and take a small amount of bi-card if I really have too .I hope this has helped .
Q: Can severe heartburn or acid reflux cause vocal cord damage?
I have had severe acid reflux for the past week and now my voice is becoming hoarse. Is there a relation between these two symptoms.
A: Yes, reflux can cause your voice to be hoarse, try Prilosec. I take 20 mg twice a day. You might want to start out with 20 mg once a day. Also, you should talk to your doctor about this. Do you know what is triggering the reflux? Stay away from alcohol, don’t smoke anything, sometimes tomatoes and tomatoe products can aggravate reflux. Anything high in acid can aggravate the reflux. Try to keep track of what you are eating and change your diet accordingly.
Q: what was your gerd or acid reflux symptoms??
tell what the symtoms are…i get a full nauseas feeling, along with a hot feeling face,w/no fever…just feels hot….also seem like i get a cough at night that about makes me vomit, but hardly ever heartburn……does it sound like it to you? what where your symptoms? do you take nexium prilosac or?
A: I have suffered from GERD. I was on Protonics for about a year. Symptoms of GERD. You chew and swallow your food. Then sometime during your meal, you will chew and swallow your food, and your food will go about half way down, then come back up.
It is of great discomfort. My suggestion to you is to call your PCP and have them set you up an appointment with a GI Doctor. The GI Doctor will perform and endoscopy of you. They will run a narrow rubber tube down your nose or throat with a camera on the end and take pictures of your throat esophagus, food tube and to the entrance of your stomach.
He will be able to tell if you have reflux or something more serious.
Q: acid reflux symptoms?
Hello, i have had a heavy feeling at the base of my throat and the top of my chest for about a week, constant burping even water ( and its always a wet burp ) sorry
and a slight asthma feeling again in my throat that makes me want to cough but when i do i realise i dont need to ( if that makes sense), bad taste in mouth, excessive mucus in the back on my throat and constant swallowing. Doc says i have acid reflux but i havent had any heartburn. Please tell me this is normal
xxxx
A: I used to have normal acid reflux then I got pregnant. It changed during my pregnancy then it was different after I gave birth. I get it the same way you have it now. Unfortunately I haven’t found a good way to stop it. Milk and tums used to be the cure but it doesn’t help when it’s so high up in the chest. So yes it is normal! You should try going on something like prilosec to see if it helps. I just started taking it myself.
Q: another acid reflux heartburn question?
hi, can acid reflux or heartburn back up in your throat and make it hard for you to swallow? are these one of the symptoms?
thanks
A: Yes, acid reflux can cause that. Talk to your doctor, though. If you have difficulty swallowing, it could be another problem, like throat cancer. Chances are small that this is the problem, but difficulty swallowing is one symptom of cancer as well as several minor conditions. Better to check it out. If it is acid reflux, there are many medications to help.
Q: Is it acid reflux, heartburn, or what? Have you had the scope down your throat, does it hurt?
A few years ago I went on a strict diet and lost weight safely. A few months in to the diet after eating alot of fresh pineapple, I started developing a really uncomfortable pain at the top of my stomach, right where the rib cage separates in front. It is kind of a throbbing pain that only happens, now, if I eat fresh pineapple more than 1 day. I eat chocolate, spicy foods, and other citrus and acidic foods regularly and have no symptoms, just with the fresh pineapple. I even have eaten it with cottage cheese to lessen the discomfort because I love it so much. I don’t think it is heartburn because I don’t get any discomfort in my esophogus or any bad taste, etc. Dr. gave me 1 month of Nexium a few yrs ago but it didn’t do much and antacids don’t touch it. I didn’t have any tests done, but I miss my pineapple, and need to diet again and want to do it safely without hurting my digestive tract. Any ideas?
A: I’ve been on acid reflux medicine for several years. It was associated with an ulcer. I used Nexium for a couple of years, now I use Prilosec because it’s a lot cheaper and works well for me. That’s me. Now about you-
Go see a doctor. A gastroenterologist is the best source of information. When I had the ulcer, he did the camera-down-my-throat thing. It didn’t hurt because I was somewhere else. The anesthesia is amazing- like a switch. One second I was asking him about how I could breathe and the next second, it was about a half-hour over with. I wasn’t woozy, I wasn’t “drunk,” it was just like I was here, and someone snipped something out of my memory. He said I’d have a sore throat, but I didn’t. (I think shoving the camera down your throat can leave your throat tender, but I didn’t have any trouble.)
Pineapple has both sugar and other stuff. My ulcer is aggravated by too much sugars, both natural and refined. Oh, I eat anything I want, but just less than before. Everyone’s different, but you may want to see about eating smaller portions and skipping the Pineapple Diet stuff. Again, this is something you should talk about with a doctor.
Take care,
Rich
