Q: Could prescription severe acid reflux (GERD) medicines possibly mask the symptoms of stomach cancer?
Prescriptions such as Prevacid, Nexium, and Prilosec.
A: I hope not, but then again any type of prescription medication has side effects with other parts of the body. Make sure you find out for sure if those medications you take causes stomach cancer.
Just keep in mind that pharmaceutical companies & doctors are not God. 8-D
Q: How can I permanently cure my stuffy nose due to Severe Acid Reflux?
Hi, I’ve suffered from congestion for over 15 years and assumed it was sinusitis. After visiting my doctor recently he informed me that it was due to excessive fluid build up in my sinuses as a result of acid reflux. I am currently on nexium and my acid reflux symptoms have improved with the exception of my stuffy nose. I wake up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. Any ideas how I can get rid of this very annoying symptom?
A: Sounds like the nexium isn’t quite enough.
Some additional things to try:
Prop up the head of your bed.
Eat an apple each night, early evening.
Eat nothing 2-3 hours before bed.
Pay attention what foods at dinner may contribute.
Q: Can severe acid reflux cause breathing difficulties after eating?
acid reflux, GERD, breathing difficulty, breathing difficulties after eating, eating, acid reflux and breathing, asthma-like symptoms only after eating, severe acid reflux
A: YES, there is a condition that doctors like to call psuedoasthma and it is from acid reflux. I have had problems for years with reflux and this last time that i was pregnant i had to use an inhaler. My baby has it too, he has had numerous hospitalizations from reflux that caused asthma like problems.
see a doctor they need to do a scope of your stomach and put u on some stronger meds like prevacid…
Q: I have acid reflux, its really severe, other interesting symptoms have occured. thanks?
The burning is not only in my stomache, causing muscle cramps making my ribs feel like they hurt, but its up to my chest, near the breastbone. Ive taken mallox, and pepcid, no help there. I started taking 15mg of prevacid 2 days ago, no help just yet. Its causing my heart to palpultate, more than it has before, dizzy, really tired, and my heart feels like its burning out of my chest. Any advice? Thanks friends.
A: I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer: information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case with hereditary), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, Stress, Anxiety or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Oranges (Juice and fruit)
Lemon (Juice and fruit)
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Potatoes (Starch)
Buffalo wings
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Doughnuts
Brownies
Cake
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Sour Cream
Cottage Cheese
High amounts of Carbohydrates
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Q: Surgery for acid reflux?
Is it possible to have a hiatal hernia repaired without having the Fundoplication surgery? If so, is it possible someone suffering from severe acid reflux symptoms could be be cured just by repairing the hiatal hernia?
A: SA – In some patients, this operation can also be done with a laparoscope — a method called “keyhole” or “telescopic” surgery. A laparoscope is a thin, hollow tube with a mini-camera on the end. Surgical tools can be sent through the laparoscope. Laparoscopic procedures use smaller cuts than open surgery, which results in less pain and scarring and shorter hospital stays.
A new procedure called endoluminal fundoplication uses a special scope (endoscope) to place small clips on the inside of the esophagus. The procedure is done to help prevent reflux.
Q: 5 week old breastfed baby w/ severe acid reflux–Stop breastfeeding?
Took my 5 week old son for an x-ray of the upper GI today and he was diagnosed with severe acid reflux. He has every symptom listed below. The doctor said that I need to stop breastfeeding and start giving him breast milk thickened with rice cereal, which will be harder for him to reflux. Something seems ‘off’ about giving my 5 week old rice cereal. The other option is medication, which I was told will not stop the reflux but will lessen the burning sensation. Obviously, I’d rather not do that either.
My poor baby is really uncomfortable and I’m at a loss. Nursing is so comforting to him but he refluxes like crazy and he’s in pain. Also, it may seem selfish, but I’m finally getting through the most PAINFUL period of breastfeeding and now I have to quit??
I’ve tried holding him at an angle and even keeping him upright but nothing has helped. I guess I should just pump & thicken it with rice cereal…??
SYMPTOMS:
* Frequent spitting up or vomiting
* Frequent blasts of crying that are painful cries, not just baby cries
* Your gut feeling tells you that your baby “hurts somewhere”
* Bursts of nightwaking “as if in pain”
* Colicky, abdominal pain after eating, even as long as one hour afterwards
* Poor sleep habits, restless
* Writhing as if in pain: drawing up legs, arching back
* Erratic feeding patterns. Refuses to feed or wants to breast or bottlefeed all the time.
* Frequent “wet burps” or “wet hiccups”
* Throaty noises: swallowing noises, choking, gagging
* Stop-breathing episodes
* Spits up like a “volcano”
A: Do NOT give up breastfeeding just because of reflux.
Q: Can severe heartburn or acid reflux cause vocal cord damage?
I have had severe acid reflux for the past week and now my voice is becoming hoarse. Is there a relation between these two symptoms.
A: Yes, reflux can cause your voice to be hoarse, try Prilosec. I take 20 mg twice a day. You might want to start out with 20 mg once a day. Also, you should talk to your doctor about this. Do you know what is triggering the reflux? Stay away from alcohol, don’t smoke anything, sometimes tomatoes and tomatoe products can aggravate reflux. Anything high in acid can aggravate the reflux. Try to keep track of what you are eating and change your diet accordingly.
Q: I am a 17 years old – dealing with severe acid reflux – any suggestions?
Hello, I am a 17 year old guy and I have been dealing with acid reflux for around 14 years. The main symptom I always dealt with was regurgitation of my food from the stomach into my mouth. I taken medications over the years such as prevacid, nexium, pepcid, zantac (which I take now), etc. Zantac helps a little bit, but the food still wants to come up. The latest problem I have encountered was heartburn (which I never had) and acid. I was wondering if anyone had problems that are similiar to mine or any good advice. Thanks for the support.
A: I had a similar problem (not as severe as yours) and Zantac (back when u could only get it with a prescription) actually took care of the problem. I guess if you have tried all of that and it still persists then go to your doctor and have them give you something different (anything that you haven’t tried yet).
Q: severe acid reflux and apple cider vinegar ?
Hey I have severe acid reflux, indigestion and burning which has caused extreme loose of diet. I have read various articles on Google and found that various people around the world have recommended taking 2 table spoon of apple cider vinegar in water 3 times a day for 5 days will heal any problems that I have now. I am on zoton now which is just like nexium. I have been taking this medicine for over 4 years now. I had endoscope as well and others test all were clear and doctors have told me that I am perfectly fine but this condition is killing me now.
If anyone had similar symptoms and had taken apple cider vinegar please help me out as i am really afraid to try this method. I am afraid this might not worsen my condition. Need help and guidance
I will refer to many posts on the internet so what i am asking makes sense. Also i am not overweight and i don’t drink. Please visit few links below

A: I would suggest a repeat visit to your doctor. I’ve never heard of taking a dilute acid to recover from and acid attack. Doesn’t make much sense. Are you overweight? If so, I suggest losing weight, staying away from fatty foods, chocolate too! Stop drinking alcohol and have smaller, more frequent meals, no big ones.
Q: GERD/Acid Reflux problems…?
I have had severe symptoms with acid reflux. At times I wake up with a fluid coming out my nose and sometimes I wake up with the sensation of drowining and then I’m in the bathroom trying to cough the burning sensation out of my throat.
I am on nexium 40mg daily. I take it at 3pm and eat my last meal at 4:30pm. The thing is that I go to bed around 10pm and still wake up with these symptoms that really hurt and interrupt my sleep. There are times I am chewing tums, eating a few crackers, drinking pepto or even downstairs drinking straight out the milk jug just to get some relieve and nothing helps. I stay away from spicy foods/carbonated bevereages and like I said I eat my last meal at 4:30, sometimes 5 but go to bed 5–6 hours later and still have this problem.
I have taken many prescribed meds, and the little purple pill (nexium) doesnt even help anymore. Do you think that surgery for this might be my only option? If so, what are the pros/cons to it.
Thanks, and sorry this was so long. I just cant take it anymore.
BTW….. I am 37 years old
A: I had GERD for 12 years… seemed like I tried EVERYthing… until my GI doc put me on a brand new (FDA-approved in Jan ‘09) med called KAPIDEX. I figured it would work just as well (or NOT well) as the rest… but she was right… it’s like a miracle drug! I haven’t had heartburn in months! it’s also good for treating erosive esophagitis.
as for surgery… it depends upon your age. I’m only 27 and my doc said they won’t do it until you are older. she also said that while the surgery is initially very effective, that there is a high likelihood of it reversing itself (i.e. “slipping”). my friend is 41 and he just had the surgery a few months ago, but it was more for his voice than for the actual reflux. he definitely has less heartburn, but it’s not all gone… so it’s definitely not a miracle cure.
Q: Acid Reflux Disease symptoms?
OK, so for about 3 weeks now I’ve been getting a very tight throat/closing throat sensation… Its absolutely horrible, and it feels like its cutting off my breathing. I get palpitations along with it, probably because i have severe anxiety, and this issue causes panic!!! I also get heartburn every 2 days or so, doesnt last very long. With that, ive been vomiting for the past 3 days, and there was a tiny amount of bright red blood 1 time…. Ive also had diarreah for the past 4 days! =[ Im looking up stuff online, and it seems like GERD… what do u guys think? Did any of u have similar symptoms? Ive been 2 the stupid doctors around where i lived, and all they say is “ur throat is dry” but believe me, this is DEFINITELY more serious than that! So today when i go, i WILL make sure something gets done!…
A: Hi I am Brandon
I have Acid Reflux and my dr was really good. My symptoms are:
> Horrible taste in my mouth especially in the morning
> Croaky voice in the morning (that may be a guy thing)
> Severe like crippling stomach craps now and then
Also some people choke really easy or sore throat.
Im only 17 so I dont know but the blood and diahorrea sounds a bit worrying so if the dr says no try the hospital.
And good luck
I am taking 2 different types of pill which help reduce the taste and pain
Q: Acid reflux?
Hey,
I was born without a valve in the esophogus/stomach causing me to have severe acid reflux.
When I was 4 I had a fundoplication which worked. My doctor said that fundoplications only last 8 – 10 years and this is my 10th year now. I had a check up endoscopy a few months ago and my surgeon said it was covered with mucus and it was infalmed – classic reflux reactions.
I have started having some of the classic symptoms feeling sick in the chest, acid in the mouth, furry white tongue, headache and sometimes heartburn. I take daily medication but its not really helping?
My doctor said that my esophogus is pretty badly scarred – what does that mean.?
Does it look like this will be the year that I need my operation?
And if I do have it how long will I be in hospital for? ( for the first one I was in for 2 nights)
Thanks
Sam xx
A: These are good questions, your doctor should be able to answer them for you. Your doc might also recommend another medicine for you. Be sure to avoid spicy foods (and alcohol, although i hope you don’t drink). The scarring in your esophagus is a build up of tissue after its been damged by the acid fromyour stomach.
Q: ttc and having bad acid reflux. side effect of prometrium or could it be pregnancy?
Ok well i started taking prometrium 8 days ago and ill start clomid in about 8 days. I’m taking this because my dr said that I’m not ovulating (dispite possitive opks every month) he thinks I’m not ovulating beacuse of my period
They has always been around the 1st of the month a 30 day cycle and it normally last 7 days but in september that all changed… I started on sep. 4th-8th then again sep. 13-18 then in oct I started spotting brown 21-26 and then on oct 26-30 I started bleeding red with clots severe pain and very heavy. I got a possitive opk on nov. 9th. then af on nov 21-24. I had a possitive opk dec 2nd. I started prometrium on dec. 2nd.
And all day today I have had severe acid reflux that is not relived with tums. I have also but on about 6 pounds, been extremly tired lately, have been getting dizzy, having some headaches, oh a lots of clear (sometimes whitish) oderless discharge but I know these are also side effects of prometrium (except the acid reflux)
I’m just wondering what yall think these symptoms are caused from and if it sounds like I’m not ovulating. Just looking for any advice
Oh and I’m gonna test in the morning just to feel better
A: Hi! I just started prometrium also! I am on my 6th day. I would ignore all the symptoms because they are side effects of prometrium. I also have acid reflux (for the 1st time since I was pregnant with child #1). I am happy that I can blame all my “symptoms” on prometrium so I don’t get my hopes up! Babydust!
Q: Acid reflux question. Do the 2 “grocery store items work?”?
I have been told I have acid reflux, although I do not usually feel heartburn. I usually have to clear my throat frequently after meals and my throat looks like a washboard effect, indicative of acid reflux. My boyfriend is also having severe symptoms and will go to the doctor tomorrow.
My question is, when I try to find out about it, the websites advertise how to cure it with 2 grocery store items but you have to “Buy” the report. Has anyone bought it and do these actually work?
I did go to a GNC store who said that it is actually your body lacking enzymes and gave me a test to take and then find out which enzyme my body is lacking. I will take that test and will find out if he is right.
Thank you for your kind answers.
Vinegar really doesn’t work like others have told me, if you can even swallow it. Yuck.
A: If the “2 grocery store item” worked, physicians would tell you about it. No, vinegar doesn’t work either. Why?
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) happens when the lower esophageal sphincter http://www.nbc10.com/2006/0209/6867277.jpg doesn’t close properly and acid backs up into the esophagus.
Acid reflux does not always hurt as it inflames and erodes your esophagus, resulting in precancerous cell changes called Barrett’s Esophagus. I have seen people in their 30’s die of esophageal cancer from untreated GERD.
Regarding the enzyme theory, some nutritionists claim that there are up to 3000 enzymes you can be deficient in; the short story is that lack of these enzymes cause hypersecretion of stomach hydrochloric acid http://www.puristat.com/digestiveenzymes/index.asp. Please be aware, if you take enzyme supplements, that the FDA doesn’t regulate them, so you aren’t guaranteed a uniform product (i.e., some capsules may contain more or less of the product than the bottle claims).
If you decide not to go with the digestive enzymes, you may want to consider traditional treatment, i.e., proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Protonix, AcipHex, Nexium, and Prilosec (Prilosec is available over the counter). PPIs stop the production of most stomach acid and allow your esophagus to heal, usually by about 8 weeks.

I suffer from GERD. I have taken Protonix, Nexium, and AcipHex. They all worked for me.
Q: How does someone die of Acid Reflux disease?
And acquaintence of mine claims that someone he knew died of complications related to Acid Reflux disease? It seems absurd to me. How is this possible? Even if it is, wouldn’t the symptoms before actual death be so severe that the person would seek out an emergency room, before the disease became lethal???
A: Several possibilities arise. With acid reflux, it is possible to aspirate stomach contents into the lungs and develop pneumonia. In a severe case, you could actually suffocate.
Over time, the acid from the stomach can erode the esophagus. Eventually there could be a massive bleed out.
Acid reflux is nothing to mess with. Unfortunately, a lot of people just think they have bad indigestion and grab a tums. If you have bad heartburn on a regular basis, see a doctor.
