Q: How to treat gastroesophageal reflux in infants?
My baby is 4 weeks old and has reflux. We tried giving Zantac as per his Pediatrician’s prescription but it had some side effects. Is there any natural way of curing this condition, apart from upright positioning and thickened feeding?
A: There are other meds, like Reglan & prevacid that are also used in infants, but obviously require a Rx. You can talk to your Dr about thickening your baby’s feeds. Enfamil even has a formula with “AR” for acid reflux behind the name (this too, requires a Rx). Don’t lay baby down right after feeding. When you do lay them down, lay them on their right side with head elevated (not flat) to promote the stomach to empty faster. You may even try sitting baby up in your lap, somewhat with one hand supporting his neck & the other feeding baby. After a feeding, sit baby in a swing or bouncy chair (w/o vibration) to keep them upright or just hold them for at least 30 minutes afterwards. also, burp baby frequently, more frequently than you would a baby without reflux.

Q: Anyone know if gastroesophageal reflux (acid reflux) happens more commonly in INFANT boys then in infant girls
A: I think any baby can be affected by it equally across the board.
Q: Is Gastroesophageal Reflux and Acid Reflux the same thing?
I have an infant that keeps throwing up, and no not spitting up, throwing up. He’s being treated as we speak, but I wanted to know if there is a difference in the two.
A: I found this answer by a Digestive System Specialist…
Answer
Acid reflux is one cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a disease in which stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus).
Because GERD may also be caused by bile reflux, the term “acid reflux disease” is more specific in describing the cause. But it doesn’t describe the body part affected by the acid reflux.
Most doctors prefer “GERD” because it’s a more comprehensive term. Drug companies that market and sell acid-suppressing medications, however, often prefer to use “acid reflux disease.”
Q: Gastroesophageal Reflux in Infants?
i have a 4mth and i wanted to know how do i know if she has Gastro Reflux
A: my babies 7 weeks old and has had reflux since birth. before medication she threw up most feeds, would constantly cry and whatever i did wouldnt soother her, she wouldnt sleep much at all and when she did she would randomly wake up disturbed and start screaming, if you laid her flat she would scream in pain, arched her back and drew her legs up, had hiccups at least tiwce a day, would go as stiff as a board when you try winding her…sh now on medication but shes still not a settled baby – will stil throw up at least once a day and still cries inconsolably – but it is better
see a doctor to get her checked out – although its supposed to be better after 3 months as reflux is due to an immature digestive system(valve in the oesophagus doesnt keep acid or food down).. x
Q: how do i start an intro informing people about GERD on infants?
an intro informing people about Gastroesophageal Reflux on infants?
a paper for the school newspaper
A: An Intro about GERD for what?
Speech? Paper? Report? Pamphlet?
ETA – you should start with defining it for students who are not familiar with it and then move onto why you are writing an article, why they should care.
Q: rice cereal and reflux?
My one month old has pretty severe gastroesophageal reflux. The dr has her on the infant form of Zantac, one ml 2x per day. She is miserable at different times of day, and we believe it is because of the acid….she makes gagging faces and looks uncomfortable around feedings, stopping frequently but still being hungry.
She also wants to eat every 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The dr would like it stretched to at least two (she is on Nestle Good Start, the only thing, breastmilk included, that she could keep down sufficiently). Despite this, she is gaining a good ammt of weight and thriving. She went from 6 lbs 12 oz at birth to 9 lbs 7 oz at one month.
Because she is constantly hungry yet never satisfied (she takes in a good amt at each feeding), the dr also recommended a small ammt of rice cereal added to her formula. I am concerned, I have read mixed things about this, but I’d like her to be more satisfied after a feeding. Will be getting another opinion. Anyone done this before?
A: I had to start giving my baby cereal too early according to today’s standards. He was 3mo & eating every hour or 2. I tried talking to his doctor & telling her that I have MS & I can not be constantly feeding him like that around the clock…. We changed doctors, to an older more experienced one & she said it would be fine to give him cereal.
One thing though, his reflux caused his formula to come out of his nose, so when we started giving him cereal we watched him even closer than we did before. We put it in the blender to make it finer and added it to his bottle.
Just my opinion, but if it were me I would give her cereal & watch her very closely.
Q: Is infant GERD anything to do with my partner’s hernia?
Ok I maybe need someone with some medical knowledge or experience of these things, but worth a try, as a baby my partner had an operation to correct Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) which was successfull and he had no further problems, almost 30 years later for the last few months he has been ill, feeling sick and bloated all the time to the point he can barely eat, anyway he went for an endoscopy today and they say he has a Hiatal Hernia, could this be anything to do with the operation he had when he was young or just coincidence, as it sounds very similar? Thanks
Im from the Uk so I should say Gord? his parents had 6 children, 4 of them needed this corrective surgery,
A: Using surgery to treat GERD in infants ( Sorry I am used to the more common UK initials GORD, since we spell oesophagus with an ‘O’, whereas the Americans start it with an ‘E’ ) is uncommon and would suggest your partner’s condition must have been very severe. Without intimate knowledge of the initial anatomy and the current appearance it is really impossible to answer your question. I would have thought after 30 years it would be pretty academic anyway.

I had pyloric stenosis and a gastroesophageal reflux, both when I was an infant. They were both cured surgically and never causes me problems. Would this keep me out of the Marines?
A: When dealing with medical questions such as yours, you need to speak with an actual recruiter or a MEPS medical doctor.
No one out here is going to be able to help you because each case is looked at independently. Call a recruiter and ask him.
