Q: How do you sing with a chronic cough/mucus buildup?
Help! I need tips.
I have been have sinus/(mucus in the throat symptoms) since probably February…which was….musical season! I’ve been singing all the way till April for the musical, then my coughing began to peak during the performances (my voice had become even worse, I had difficulty reaching high notes smoothly)! Everytime I go to school now, I start to cough. Or if I’m in the cold outside, I may cough. And if I lie down, my speaking voice becomes hoarse. Now that I’m resting at home (vacation), my coughing is diminishing although I do get this random “allergic-like reaction” sometimes (don’t know if it’s allergies, I never had them before). In the morning, the mucus buildup is worse. I guess my singing voice is recovering bit by bit. Yes, I can sing high notes after warming up a little bit, but they are very soft and quiet with my head voice. Belting was one of my best things when it comes to singing…Now…I can’t even belt above a G4. My chest voice sounds absolutely terrible, too. The middle register in particular is where I sound best…it is probably the worst now. I am thinking I might have post nasal drip or LPR reflux (I did notice some GERD symptoms sometimes when I exercise). Any tips to recover my singing voice with this chronic cough/mucus buildup?
A: Go to the doctor.
Sounds like you need medicine (perhaps for allergies).
Q: Help with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)?
I am 22 years old. For about a year now, I have had this chronic clearing of my throat. It is somewhat uncontrollable and it persists for about an hour and happens 4-5 times a day. It feels like my throat is filling up with mucus but when I try to clear my throat nothing really comes up. I just find myself clearing my throat over and over again for about an hour until it passes.
Now, I used to smoke for 5 years, but when this cough came up, I immediately quit. I went to a doctor. They took a throat culture and told me it was GERD. I took some medication for 2 months and it didn’t help. I kept clearing my throat.
I went back after those 2 months and a different doctor told me it was just allergies. She put me on meds and those didn’t help either.
Again, I went to the doctor another month later and they told me it was GERD again. I am currently on a new med, Omeprazole, for almost a month and this doesn’t help either.
Reading up on GERD, it can have symptoms such as chronic cough like I have, but it also comes with acid reflux and heartburn, which I don’t get. If this is the case, what are the chances that I actually have GERD?
If I do, in fact, have GERD, why wont any of the medications I am taking work? What would you suggest I do?
this coughing usually happens when I eat, drink alcohol or workout
A: I have pretty much the same problem as you do. I have GERD but don’t get the heartburn however I know what you mean about the cough, plus I used to have horrible stomach pains. First let me tell you you’ll get better results getting this problem under control through your diet. That cough, from what I’ve read, can be caused by acid in your system. You’ve got to eat more alkaline foods to balance the acid in your stomach. Start by focusing more on fresh fruit, vegetables, soy, honey, and raisins. You can have citrus fruits as well, and whole wheat breads and pastas. Keep away from all meats, alcohol, milk, sodas, eggs, tea, coffee, fish, flour based products, beans and oatmeal. The list of acid forming foods is very long. For a more complete list of what you can and can’t eat just google acid/alkaline diet. Add lemon to your water when you drink as this will help to make your stomach more alkaline too. I found that this helped much more than the medication I was given and now I pretty much don’t have those symptoms anymore. If I do I just drink water with lemon and that pretty much clears things up. I hope this helps you out. Good luck. Also wanted to add that I now can eat any thing I want to, you don’t have to live on that diet. At least I didn’t. I used it till I got my symptoms under control.
Q: My son has chronic abdominal pain. He’s been in the hospital and to the doctor several times. Any answers?
We do know that he doesn’t have crohns disease. the Dr. says it’s GERD. I don’t believe this. I have GERD. and the symptoms aren’t the same. Has doesn;t have acid choking him to death. It is chronic pain in his stomach. And only in his stomach.I hope someone can enlighten me so I can get him some real help. It’s hard to see a 9 year old child having these kinds of pains.
He has ADHD. He doesn’t take medicine because he had so many side effects. he has some problems in school. But it’s with reading and writing. As far as it goes with home. he has it made. It’s not gastritis. I don’t know which wat to turn
It’s not Crohn’s. His markers came back negative. When I take him back to the doctor I’ll ask his to test him for the Diverticulitis. This is more common in people over 60. But it’s worth a try to have it done.
A: It can be a nervous cause. I suffered from chronic stomach pains for many years (since I was 8-9) and no doctor could diagnose anything for sure. It was untill I went to psico-therapy that the pains sarted to reduce, We tend to internalize many of our external problems into our body and many times its the body which starts asking for help in the way of pain and illness. And yes, 9 year olds can have problems too. Is everything ok in the family, at his school?
Q: I’m a teenager with GERD. What natural remedies- ie. not western medicine- can I use to heal my GERD?
I’ve tried elevating my bed and I’ve made dietary changes.
I don’t eat dairy, I don’t smoke, and I don’t drink.
I just recently diagnosed myself with GERD, after two years of waking up with a hoarse voice, having chronic sore throats and nausea, having trouble swallowing, and all of the other symptoms of GERD. I usually am hoarse for most of the day, but in the evening, I can talk with relatively little discomfort.
What kind of natural or alternative medicines (don’t recommend medication) can I use to relieve my pain? I heard that cabbage juice helps, but I don’t have a juicer and I don’t know where to purchase cabbage juice. What should I do?
A: Sorry to hear you too! I’ve never heard that dairy was a bad thing for GERD, it was mostly citrus and tomatoes.
As for the Western medicine, everyone I know who took it found it worked for a while then they got worse-me too! So I am glad you are not going through the exercise! Adding cinnamon to your food is a good thing, some pineapple is good too (because you need SOME good acid) but what helped me the absolute most is a pill called PRIMAL DEFENSE ULTRA by Garden of Life. I got this recommendation from a friend of mine who is an opera singer. (I am a singer too) and trust me I was in a panic b/c I couldnt get better with any of the drugs. NOW I take this first thing in the morning before eating anything, then I take another 1-2 at sometime during the day. They also make a powder called Acid Defense. I did drink the powder for a while but not sure if it helped. I only do the PRIMAL DEFENSE ULTRA now and I am about 98% cured. I can tell you from BOTH of us–it took about a year-I feel like I had to go through hell (getting off the prescriptions) but it got better, it will take time because you have to achieve balance. You need some acid, the prescriptions either shut off ALL of the proton pumps or some of them, then your body just tries to make more and eventually succeeds.
This supplement I suggest is available at all Vitamin Shoppe Stores but I now get mine on Amazon, with a subscription I got the best price through them. For a very good quick fix–when you have symptoms take a charcoal capsule and it WILL stop the acid in its tracks-this is for acute symptoms, the Primal Defense is for the cure.
Obviously you know to drink water, eat smaller meals, nothing close to bed-time, and dont lie down 2-4 hours after eating. Hang in there, its a while in coming but you will get there.
Charcoal for immediate relief, Primal Defense Ultra everyday. You can email me if you want.
Q: Chronic ear aches and metallic taste?
For the past year I’ve developed the following symptoms: Tinnitus (every other day) ear aches especially when tinnitus is strong, sinus drainage, post nasal drip and a bitter metallic taste in my throat as well as bad anxiety, and muslce cramps across my chest and upper back, Also GERD. Does anybody know what I might have? Are these symptoms related?
A: My aunt had all the sinus and ear symptoms plus the metallic taste. Her post nasal drip was always clear and after seeing several Dr’s she found a neurosurgeon who did the right test and scans and found that she had a small hole behind her nose where she was leaking cerebral fluid at a slow rate into her sinus and down her throat. She had surgery and they patched it and she is fine now. She also had bad headaches that came on suddenly as well. I would see someone in the neuro dept.
Q: Loose productive cough at night (excess mucus): GERD (Acid reflux), asthma or sinus problem?
I’ve had a chronic loose productive cough with asthma attack for 2 years. Chest x-rays taken said they were clear. Months ago a doctor told me it was probably acid reflux cough without heartburn.
With diet and stomach protective pills daytimes cough attacks after meals are now very rare but still I wake up at night (between 1AM and 3AM) coughing and expelling mucus. Sitting for 30/60 minutes makes the symptom disappear and sleeping the rest of the night is perfect. Asthma inhalers spray helps a lot because it makes breathing easyer but I don’t think it’s appropriate.
Also mostly late evening and night, I feel lungs full of mucus and during the daytime I’ve to clear my nose often.
I’d like to know if the facts are connected in some way, if GERD is the cause of the pulmonary mucus (bronchitis), the cough with asthma and the nose running (I noticed the nose closing after excessive food).
Or maybe it is a paranasal sinuses problem that is now causing everything.
What do you think?
Tks
A: Acid reflux may cause bronchial asthma:
Reflux may induce reflex bronchial spasm
Acid may be aspirated in minimal amounts and initiate broncho-constriction
Inflammation of the upper respiratory tract associated with reflux releases chemical substances which mediate bronchospasm.
About 75% of patients with asthma have acid reflux disease. Reflux symptoms usually precede attacks of wheezy chest. Asthma is also initiated by the same dietary and lifestyle factors which trigger acid reflux symptoms. There is a good response to proton pump inhibitors given twice daily and treatment should continue for at least two months.
Q: Do you think this is GERD?
I’ve had this chronic stomach problem for, well, as long as I can remember. In the past year, I’ve had a VERY stressful home-life and it’s gotten WAY worse.
So does this sounds like GERD?
- Almost constant 24/7 upset stomach(NOT nausea. Just a feeling like I’m going to throw up deep in my stomach, not lower like nausea)
- Difficulty breathing(Like, feeling like I can’t get enough air in my lungs. Like they’re not big enough or something)
- Difficult swallowing when drinking in a wierd position(Like from a water fountain)
- No heartburn
I’ve just started a round of Prilosec, and I’m going to get some ginger and honey and peppermint to help me manage my symptoms.
Please help me figure out what’s wrong. I’ve been to the doctor, and they said I have severe anxiety(Which I do, but I know that’s not the problem)
A: Dr.’S have a hard time treating patients with anxiety(in my opinion) Everytime something it wrong they say “it’s anxiety related” bla bla bla. I don’t think it sounds like GERD. I had a similar thin with not feeling like I was getting enough air. Found out I had asthma, very mild but an inhaler relieves that. As for the nausea have you been checked for an ulcer? We all know stress and anxiety can exagerate an ulcer big time. Bottom line is if you really feel like it’s not anxiety then keep looking for answers because you know your body better then anyone. GoodLuck
Q: I’m a singer with post-nasal drip? GERD?
Ok, where do I begin?
About 18 months ago, I started feeling some buildup in the back of my throat. Ever since then, I’ve been clearing my throat constantly. It probably wouldn’t be so much of an issue if I didn’t sing. So, naturally, I first thought the issue was swollen vocal chords and quit singing for over a month. The problem persisted. I then went to a very highly recommended ENT doctor and she diagnosed me with GERD. I went on Prevacid and nasal sprays immediately; that never seemed to cure me. So, since then, I have tried not eating spicy foods, not drinking caffeine, all other sorts of changes in my diet, lifted the head of my bed, etc. It has been a year and a half now and the clearing of my throat is driving me crazy, its a bother to others at the office, and I feel that it could permanently damage my throat.
Through some researching, I’ve come across some others with similar issues. Could this be allergy-related? I’ve never had an allergy problems until about three years ago, but since then, every spring is hell for about 2 1/2 to 3 months. I’m constantly violently sneezing throughout this time period, my nose extremely stuffed up, and I can feel that my nasal cavity is irritated and swollen. Maybe this is some sort of chronic post-nasal drip that is causing excessive mucus in my throat?
Because I’ve tried many solutions for it, I’m leaning away from GERD as the culprit. The allergies are now suspect. I also still think that this could be singing related. So, if anyone out there seems to have common symptoms or experience with my situation, a helpful reply would be greatly appreciated. This affects my singing, work, everyday life, and I’ve got to find an answer. Thanks again.
Also, there seems to be more buildup in my throat in the mornings and especially after eating meals.
A: I certainly don’t want to presume to give you medical advice, but you do sound pretty miserable.
Every spring I used to have trouble for several weeks with a nasal drip thing that drained down my throat, kept my throat irritated, and made me want to cough all the time. I blamed it on elm tree blooms, but never really knew for sure. Then my situation changed, and in elm blossom time I was some place else, and did not have the trouble. Now I’ve been back to my primary home, with elm trees in the front yard, but I have not experienced the nasal drip problem. I have heard that sometimes people can outgrow allergies.
I have started trying to be fairly regular with rinsing my mouth with salt. I put a little bit of salt in my mouth, swish it around for five, ten minutes, and then spit it out. I also use salt nasal sprays. Ayr is a good brand, for me, and a lot cheaper than some of the others. I am reluctant to spray anything up my nose, but I’ve learned to do it anyway. A couple of times I had been negligent, and felt a cold coming on, went back to my salt routines, and beat the cold back in about 36 hours.
Look up salt nasal sprays on the internet and check it out for yourself.
Q: Chronic tonsillitis?
Does anyone in the medical community know why I would get chronic tonsillitis (over 3 years, probably close to 15 times to the hospital). The infection is almost always bacterial. I do have GERD (just discovered) that is eroding my throat, and i have a endoscopy and colonoscopy this week because a barium swallow showed a bleeding ulcer, and also have had intestinal bleeding. I have severe head aches all the time and have a sensitivity to gluten (celiac always comes back negative). I ended up in the hospital again this weekend because I couldn’t swallow at all and all my glands, lymph nodes were huge. they gave me iv fluids and antibiotics (and when they gave me morphine I felt a sudden burning feeling in the glands in my neck and behind my jaw, i thought that part of my head was on fire). I also have a really hard time losing weight. Even when I’m super healthy, I have never dropped a pound, only turn it into muscle-I’ve tried everything!
THe doctors don’t seem to know whats going on, each specialist thinks its something different…I’m wondering if there is something that links everything or a lot the symptoms?
A: Have you tried an endocrinologist who specializes in conditions of the endocrine system (i.e., glands).
Q: Here are my symptoms, but the doctor says I am “imagining it and if I stop thinking about it, it will go away”
1. Chronic Chest pains (shooting pains, which sometime travel up my leg and down my arm)
2. Muscle Tremors
3. I am ALWAYS cold
4. Dizzines
5. Insomnia
6. Stomach Problems (feels like something is wriggling in there, no I’m not pregnant)
7. I get the shakes when I drink
8. Constanly running into things
9. bad-balance
10. Always itchy
11. (I have been diagnosed with GERD, but that’s another story)
12. I can only eat about 8oz of food before I feel full
What the begeezus is goin on???
I am 26 years old, there is no history of illness in my family. I live a healthy lifestyle and things are relatively stress free. I don’t think it’s all in my head.
A: It sounds to me as though you are exhausted, like really deeply exhausted! How old are you? What has been going on in your life?
From the symptoms you have given I would recommend:
Magnesium to help relax muscles (for the chest pains), and for the tremours.
Some good sleep/relaxation and laughter! (a funny movie; time with good friends). If you are not sleeping, meditation can help, but the chest pains suggest you are suffering from anxiety, and sometimes meditation is difficult when you are anxious. To help sleep, try melatonin, chamomile tea, oats (food or tea), passionflower tea (you can mix them together if you like). Lavender (fresh, dried or oil) under your pillow can help induce relaxing sleep.
Bitters (Swedish bitters/Digestive bitters/Angostura bitters – anything with gentian in it – not sure which country you are in, so not sure what products are available to you) 20-30 minutes before meals. This helps get your digestion going so that you can handle food, and possibly eat a little more.
Lemonbalm (Melissa officinalis) is great for a nervous stomach. It helps with that wriggling feeling in the stomach, and also helps the nervous system and is mildly antidepressant (sunshine in a bottle). If you can get the tea (or grow the plant) have a couple of cups of lemonbalm tea a day.
Start each day with a large glass of warm water with some lemon juice in it. Start with just a few drops of lemon juice and build up to the juice of half a lemon. After a week or two, have two glasses with lemon juice. (Doing two glasses straight off is sometimes too much – can cause a “detox” reaction ). This should help digestion and skin. (It really helps the liver which is implicated in skin and digestive complaints)
Try and find a good adaptogen mix, with herbs like Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous), Schizandra (Schizandra chinensis). In Australia, we have one by Nutra-Life called Fatigue fighter, or one by Greenridge called Multi-Vital which would be good.
Have a hot bath before bed – both relaxing and warming. Add essential oil of lavender to the bath to help relaxation.
Eating oats helps nourish an exhaiusted nervous system.
Eat easily digested foods like soups, lightly cooked vegetables. Raw food, although generally healthier, is harder to digest, and you sound as though you are too exhausted to digest food properly. Protein powders in a smoothie, or spirulina can be good alternatives to full meals. If you choose to have spirulina (a very nourishing and easily assimilated super food), mix it with something containing banana to mask the taste. I use banana and mango juice, but can put it in a smoothie with 1/2 banana.
I hope this helps, and wish you all the best.

A: What Causes Heart Burn?
Heart burn is caused by a faulty muscle in the stomach. There is a “flap” at the top of the stomach that stops food from traveling back up into the esophagus. Sometimes the flap doesn’t work properly and stomach acid escapes from the stomach. When the acid escapes, heart burn occurs.
Factors that contribute to heart burn: pregnancy, smoking, eating large meals, being overweight, and wearing tight clothing around the waist.

Q: GERD sufferers or medical experts? I need help!?
I am 30 years old and I have chronic acid regurgitation. I don’t really have heartburn. My first symptom was neck pain, followed by a burning throat (I didn’t realize at the time that the two were related, but the neck pain seems to correlate with the other symptoms). I was prescribed rabeprazole which made everything better really quickly. Then I stopped taking the medication only to have my symptoms return immediately along with a new symptom: a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE taste in my mouth. When I resumed taking the medication however, all my symptoms went away again.
Then a few months later, the horrible taste returned and this time I didn’t think it was the acid regurgitation, because it wasn’t accompanied by a sore throat and the doctor sent me to the dentist (my teeth and mouth were perfect), and then for a sinus x-ray (all fine)…and THEN he prescribed Nexium. The nexium made me feel better again.
Now it’s been about 8 weeks and the horrible taste has returned. The Nexium is twice the dosage as the rabeprazole was, and as far as I know it’s pretty much the same thing. My doctor has now prescribed prevacid for me to take, but I’m pretty discouraged at this point. It’s beginning to look as though everything is just going to stop working. Maybe this means there’s something else going on? I don’t know what to do…my doctor seems unconcerned. Anybody else have this problem or know anything about it?
A: if nexium hasnt worked you should have a gastroscope really
Q: Unknown chronic cough w/ mucus for over 2 yrs?
I have had a chronic cough producing thick yellow sputum for over 2 years. The condition started shortly after i began working in lower manhattan and i had no syptoms until late april of 2006. The immediate diagnosis was to treat with antibiotics for a week. I went out drinking before the cycle of antibiotics were over and did not get better. So of coarse i figured that i needed to take antibiotics again because i just failed to stay the course. Again i did not get better. From there i have seen several allergists, pulmonary specialists, and ENTs with no diagnosis. These specialists have been widely regarded as some of the best in NYC. CT scan showed inflamaiton but no bronchiectisus. I have tested negative for CF, every immune disease i have been tested for, and even tested negative for asthma. One allergist was convinced that the whole thing is a result of mold. I have never had this problem before and that did not seem to make sense to me, especially with the thickness, color and quanitity of mucus.
At this point i am taking Advair 150/50 once a day and things seem to be under some control. But i still have coarse breathing (especially in the morning when i take a deep breathe) and can still produce mucus from deep in my chest when i try.
I am 27 years old, a non smoker, and i have the only other symptom that i have is Post Nasal drip. I should mention that the Post nasal drip has been an unstoppable force. No allergy medicine has done a thing to even slow it down. I am running 20+ miles a week so i truly do not feel ill, but the disgusting sputum and crackling breathing is quite concerning. What happened?? What changed??
I will admit that i drink alcohol 2-3 times a week but i am far from an alcoholic. It does seem to make the sputum get more plentiful 1-2 days after drinking. And my throat seems to burn in the morning after drinking. I have done a 24 hr PH test and came back normal for GERD. Nothing comes back as postive! The only thing that every came back was pseudomonas and my Infectious disease specialist said that it was the problem…. he actually thought that it might be from the drinking. Has anyone ever heard of this?? or anything even close?? To say that i am desperate for answers is an understatement.
I do NOT smoke
A: I don’t want to concern you too much but did you happen to have an AIDS test? my cousin went undiagnosed for a couple years with your symptoms then a Family GP happened to test him the very first time he was seen.Again I don’t mean to alarm you…I was just wondering .another thing is sinusitis OR you could be allergic to bar smoke !! it might be staying in your clothing you throw in the hamper!
Q: chronic fatigue or something else ?
okay ever since about the first week in december 2008 i have been feeling like utter crap every other day. i did get a touch of food poisoning around the 18th of last month and that resolved in a about 5 days. i have also been under an enormous amount of stress and depression because im out of work right now. i do have gerd and ibs so i take prilosec and reglan for it. i have noticed my ibs has been acting up alot the past month. stomach discomfort, nausea, burping, gas, weird stools at times. but one prominent symptom seems to be fatigue ? like i can sleep 11 hours a day and still get tired. i am little over weight and i need to quit smoking too. my question is can ibs or the depression cause my symptoms ? i have no health insurance so i cant go to a doctor either. i am just worried what might be going on with me ? i also notice i bruise easily all of the sudden. what could this be ?
i forgot to mention i have had ibs & gerd since 2003 and fatigue has been a symptom, it just is worse lately ! i also went to the hospital last month when i was sick with food poisoning and they did extensive blood work and everything turned out ok.
yeah but i just had blood work done, if i had anemia or hepatitis would that not of showed up ?
yeah i have a feeling it’s from the smoking and stress !
A: I bet you are smoking a lot more these days also due to the stress. yes depression can cause those symptoms but it sounds to me like it is due to the smoking and the toxins in the cigs. I am a smoker and have been on the patches for 2 months now and my energy level has increased ten fold. I now have the energy to exercises which gives me even more energy. the stomach problems can be the start of an ulcer which cigg smoking can really aggravate.
Try going to walmart and getting the generic patches they have 14 in a box you wear one a day and a box costs less then 30 dollars cheaper then a carton of cigs. Cig shrink your blood vessels which can lead to immature heart disease and high blood pressure.
