Q: Can GERD symptoms cause chest pain?
First, I HAVE been to my doc a thousand times over and he doesnt know where the chest pain comes from, and its certainly not panic attacks. When i get the chest pains (generally between my breastbone), i have the urge to burp and my throat swells a little, making it more difficult to swallow. Is this consistent with what GERD could possibly cause?

A: It may be, but a few things may need to be ruled out first. GERD can cause chest pain and is caused by diet (fried foods, acidic foods like spaghetti sauce and pizza), smoking, drinking pop, obesity and inactivity. Does your throat get hoarse? Does eating make the pain better or worse? Also, if this hasn’t been done already you may want to get a test for H. Pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.

A: ABSOLUTELY – i have stomach ulcers and when they flare up it feels like hell in my chest – however if you have shortness of breath at the same time call 911 !!!

Q: 17 Year Old Male W/ Chest Pain…GERD?
Last Monday i started to get chest pains. So my mom took me to get it checked out. I had an EKG – nothing found – also nothing found in blood. Between tuesday and Friday it got worse because i kept thinking about it, (i am treated for anxiety as it is.) I thought i was having a heart attack. I mean i was not in agony but with everything that happened w/ my dad i was scared (he died of a heart attack at age 43 though he did smoke ALOT) Friday i still did not feel good even worse bcause i couldnt stop thinking about it. We called 911 and they took me right in. They did 2 ekg’s and 2 blood tests – nothing w/ cardiac and ekg was fine. I should also add the last few months i have been getting ALOT of indigestion. They brought in a GI dr and he is almost positive it’s GERD because that can cause pain which i did not know. He put me on nexium. Tomorrow i am going to a heart DR just to be sure. Could these be symptoms of GERD? The pain is in the left breatbone sometimes the right.

A: Could definately be GERD. Could also be anxiety. if it comes and goes, especially when you are breathing, could also be pluerisy, asthma, or another respiratory problem.

It is good that you had both blood tests and EKG though. Although heart attacks at 17 are very rare, they are not impossible.

If it is GERD, you should have relief within a few days from the nexium. Notice if the pain is worse at night or after eating.. Gerd has a tendency to be worse at night.

Hi there! I’m a 21 year old Female who was recently diagnosed with GERD. I took EKG’s, and did regular blood pressure examinations (because i went to the ER twice thinking i was having a heart attack) At first they attributed my pains to anxiety, but i wasn’t convinced and kept returning. They then diagnosed me as having GERD, but when i google GERD symptoms, i don’t have any of those symptoms, OR i have extra symptoms. I do experience chest pain, it’s usually right behind my sternum and in my ribs. I also do frequently burp or feel like i have to burp, or feel like i constantly have something in my throat. Also people have told me that my voice sounds different (more raspy) and GERD is known to change voices. I have been taking prilosec for my symptoms, it helps but hasn’t taken the pain away completely. I also have frequent pain in my back, neck, jaw, ears, head, and arms. That is a symptom that isn’t common with GERD. The pain on a scale of 1-10 isn’t more than a 5, but when it all hits me at once it is pretty scary and the pain can be about an 8 or a 9. Everytime i go to the ER though, they always say that i’m okay, but they haven’t run any diagnostic tests on my GERD. So if you have GERD or symptoms similar to these can you describe them for me, cause i’m still not convinced i have that problem.

A: If you’re having severe pain that radiates to your back, neck and jaw, that sounds like when I had gallstones. I have GERD and the prilosec takes it away completely. And GERD doesn’t make you feel pain on that type of scale. It feels mostly like your stomach is one big ball of acid.

i have had test done diagnoese with gerd anxiety gas

A: Me again! You didn’t mention this in your other questions, but here you mention obesity. SOOOOO many doctors still believe that you have to be skin and bones to have celiac, which is what was taught in medical school up until just a few years ago. In truth, people with celiac are just as likely to be overweight as underweight.

Basically, if celiac is your problem, your intestines aren’t absorbing the nutrients in your food. In some people, their bodies waste away. In others their bodies will hold onto everything because, with the lack of absorption of nutrients, your body thinks there’s no food coming in and wants to hold onto every little thing. I don’t know if you have this, but for me, before I was diagnosed, I was constantly hungry. I was either eating or actively resisting the urge to eat. I was overweight as well. For other people, even if they were overweight before diagnosis, they report that they had no appetite and didn’t eat much and had no explanation of why they couldn’t lose weight. Some of them were even accused of cheating on diets when they weren’t.

Like I said in one of my other answers, this may not be the whole answer, but the more I read from you, the more I suspect that it’s part of what is happening.

Q: Can Gerd cause strange symptoms during physical activity?
Okay, lately just doing the simplest of physical tasks has been making me feel slightly sick to my stomach and giving me chest pains in the center and left/center area of my chest. I’ve been on Prilosec for months now and have recently been inactive for about two months because of an injury. The pain seems to accompany an increase in burping as well. I was wondering if this sounded more like a heart or GERD problem.
Had a clean stress test about three months ago.

A: I have Gerd and I ended up with spasm of my Coronary arteries. Hospital thought it was a heart attack but it wasn’t. Get it checked out, most probably nothing to worry about, but the inflamation can cause the same symptoms of heart problems.

Q: GERD Symptoms for a Teenager?
Hi, I am 14 and for the past 4 or 5 years I have had chest pains and other abdominal and arm pain.

I went to the Doctor who took my blood pressure, blood oxygen, lung capacity, pulse, BMI and general health and said it was all fine and that it is almost certainly not my heart; so little chance, it’s not worth worrying about. They said it could be something called Costochondritis.

I was searching through the Internet for something that fits my symptoms and I can came across something called GERD.

Can any GERD sufferers help me with this? Does it seem to fit my symptoms of random pain in my abdomen and down the arms? I also sometimes get shortness of breath? Can this relate to it?

Any help is appreciated.

I was recently diagnosed with GERD. I have shortness of breath/restricted breathing, chest pain, and muscle fatigue. Do these symptoms generally go away as GERD is treated?

A: Your body is reacting to the disease which is why you have all those symptoms. Once you start taking medication those symptoms should begin to become less invasive, but then again each medication affects individuals differently. I guess the answer is, it should get better.

Well i got gerd and im only 19. My heart sometimes Pounds Hard enough for my chest to move with it…I jus wanna know is this normal with gerd? But also before i had gerd bout 4 weeks ago i had chest wall pain due to an injury on my left side.Could this be cus of GERD or something else?Not only that my stomach also moves with my heart beat so i dont know if it is a GERD symptom

A: hmmm…thats weird…i dont know much about adult gerd but my infant daughter has it and none of those things happen to her..i mean her stomach moves sometimes when she is in really bad pain and when she breathes of course!! i would call a doctor and ask…if you are on any medication for the gerd that could be an adverse reaction…get checked out :)

3 of them says it is gastric chest arm pains all 3 said it at different times of the year and 1 said anxiety makes it worse and 1 said weight were I am obese.

1 doctor was a heart doctor saying anxiety the other 2 i think were normal doctors at the hospital i hAve went 3 different times.

A: Well those are classic signs of heart disease. But if you are aware of that then you know how to simulate them in order to get attention. I would have to say pick a dr and go with him until you disprove him and then pick another one. You may want to investigate the reason you are overweight and try to connect that to your need for attention if that is the case. So maybe start with a psych of some sort.

Q: Can GERD cause bad chest pains?? Please help?
im a 28 female, and i keep going to the er and my doc office because i keep getting bad chest pains and shortness of breath..the doctors have checked me for heart problems including heart attack and insist that it has nothing to do with my heart and they all keep saying i have GERD. Can this really cause these symptoms?? Please help if u can and thanks in advance. If u have a question i might be able to answer just let me know. :)
I also get pains in my arms and im getting sooo depressed and upset because i keep going to the docs and they are rude to me at the er cause i have been there so much

A: I have had GERD for a while, and repeated acid reflux can indeed give chest pains, and other uncomfortable symptoms. The shortness of breath could easily be understandable from anxiety because hey, you think you’re having a heart attack!.

I have no idea about the arm pains, but if your heart checks out maybe it is unrelated.

You should get proper meds if it is GERD, because there can be really serious long term complications if it goes untreated.

Main thing to do is get more nutrion. Eat organic fruits and vegetables only for the next 5-10 days (a lot of them, juice them if possible). Drink a lot of distilled water (gallon a day) and I guarantee you’ll feel like a new person quickly. A: I have GERD and I don’t get shortness of breath but the chest pains are there. More importnantly you will get sick after meals and feal indigestion in your chest kind of like heart burn but worst. You could also be caused to vomit from it if it is really serious. I would try to contact a doctor if I were you and I hope everything is okay. GOOD LUCK!
