Q: Does, did your baby have GERD? If so what where their symptoms, and what helps?
I am beginning to wonder if my daughter has GERD. Heres her symptoms:
She chokes/coughs during and sometimes after feedings.
She hates laying flat, and she sometimes will spit up (so I elevate her)
She hiccups CONSTANTLY sometimes resulting in her spitting her food back up. And her hiccups make her VERY fussy.
And she swallows quite a bit. And even acts like shes chewing at times.
What do you think? I am definitely going to bring it up to the doctor and see what they say.
I don’t know are GERD and acid reflux the same thing? I just read something about GERD, but maybe but maybe its acid reflux… I don’t know shes my first.
A: Sounds like reflux. My daughter has had it since week 2. We have to keep her sitting at a 45 degree angle while feeding her and then 45 mins after she eats. She has projectile vomiting and you can hear it coming up. She has been on Zantac since she was 2 weeks which helps with the acid burning her throat. We elevated her crib too but she normally sleeps on my chest. After she eats at night its hard to keep her upright 45 minutes and stay awake myself. I saw you other question about the congestion. Alot of times when they spit up it goes into their lungs which will cause congestion. Just keep an eye on her when she spits up. If they are laying down is usually when it gets in their lungs. Good Luck.
Q: Are these GERD symptoms?
*bad taste in my mouth in the morning
*very full feeling
*cough
*nauses stomache
*some heart burn
should i take some prilosac? thats what the dr told my gf to try…thanks
A: ur proberly jst a bit sick lots of ppl gt so i think u should take some prilo sac
Q: Loose productive cough at night (excess mucus): GERD (Acid reflux), asthma or sinus problem?
I’ve had a chronic loose productive cough with asthma attack for 2 years. Chest x-rays taken said they were clear. Months ago a doctor told me it was probably acid reflux cough without heartburn.
With diet and stomach protective pills daytimes cough attacks after meals are now very rare but still I wake up at night (between 1AM and 3AM) coughing and expelling mucus. Sitting for 30/60 minutes makes the symptom disappear and sleeping the rest of the night is perfect. Asthma inhalers spray helps a lot because it makes breathing easyer but I don’t think it’s appropriate.
Also mostly late evening and night, I feel lungs full of mucus and during the daytime I’ve to clear my nose often.
I’d like to know if the facts are connected in some way, if GERD is the cause of the pulmonary mucus (bronchitis), the cough with asthma and the nose running (I noticed the nose closing after excessive food).
Or maybe it is a paranasal sinuses problem that is now causing everything.
What do you think?
Tks
A: Acid reflux may cause bronchial asthma:
Reflux may induce reflex bronchial spasm
Acid may be aspirated in minimal amounts and initiate broncho-constriction
Inflammation of the upper respiratory tract associated with reflux releases chemical substances which mediate bronchospasm.
About 75% of patients with asthma have acid reflux disease. Reflux symptoms usually precede attacks of wheezy chest. Asthma is also initiated by the same dietary and lifestyle factors which trigger acid reflux symptoms. There is a good response to proton pump inhibitors given twice daily and treatment should continue for at least two months.
Q: what was your gerd or acid reflux symptoms??
tell what the symtoms are…i get a full nauseas feeling, along with a hot feeling face,w/no fever…just feels hot….also seem like i get a cough at night that about makes me vomit, but hardly ever heartburn……does it sound like it to you? what where your symptoms? do you take nexium prilosac or?
A: I have suffered from GERD. I was on Protonics for about a year. Symptoms of GERD. You chew and swallow your food. Then sometime during your meal, you will chew and swallow your food, and your food will go about half way down, then come back up.
It is of great discomfort. My suggestion to you is to call your PCP and have them set you up an appointment with a GI Doctor. The GI Doctor will perform and endoscopy of you. They will run a narrow rubber tube down your nose or throat with a camera on the end and take pictures of your throat esophagus, food tube and to the entrance of your stomach.
He will be able to tell if you have reflux or something more serious.
Q: help cough and weird symptoms for 5 months now?
so i had unprotected sex 3 times on oct 19th with some1 i knew as a child, he ejaculated in me once, in early jan my dr said i was neg for mono but the levels were high, which led her to believe that it i had mono recently. since nov ive been tested 3 times for hiv. the last time i was tested was jan 28 and it came back neg. ive had this cough since nov but now its hard to swallow, (no swollen lymphs), fatigue, low ab cold sensation, low fevers 3 since dec but after tylenol went away. ive been to a gastro dr twice who put me on prilosec otc and said that he highly doubts i have hiv, Ive been to my regular doctor 5 times & she just keeps laughing at me, yesterday she said i might have asthma or gerd, my obgyn ive been to 4 times since this happened was tested for stds and hiv about 3 weeks after oct 19th, tested for herpes and hiv dec 19th, and went in about a month ago for a vaginitis culture, came back neg, gave a script for xanax. all symptoms are not constant they come go. help!
A: I don’t think this is an STD
Q: Heaviness in chest and heart “fluttering”. No cough or cold symptoms?
For the past 3 weeks I’ve noticed that throughout the day I have a sensation of my heart fluttering. I can’t think of a better way to describe it, but my heart isn’t racing, just feels like it is fluttering. I don’t get short of breath, but sometimes it makes me feel a little lightheaded. At first I thought the cause could be caffeine, so for 2 weeks I haven’t consumed caffeine, but I still get this sensation several times throughout the day.
A week ago, in addition to this fluttering sensation, I’ve had a feeling of heaviness in my chest. It’s not that noticeable until I take a deep breath. Then it feels like how you might feel if you took a run outside in the cold. I don’t have a runny nose or cold or anything either.
I am a bit overweight, but I’ve been eating balanced meals (grilled chicken salads, fish, etc..) for the past few weeks and drinking a lot of water, along with exercising at least 40 minutes everyday. I don’t have GERD or Asthma and I was wondering what the cause could possibly be?
Thanks!
Thanks for your answers everyone! I don’t really have allergies until midsummer, but I’ll ask my doctor. I haven’t had anxiety problems in years and I’m not under stress and pretty happy
I can’t get a doctors appointment until Thursday. I take a walk/light jog every morning or evening (after work). Perhaps my heart is getting back in shape. Would that make it feel like it’s fluttering 4-5x day?
A: We can’t see you so I will write a few problems that might be bothering you:
1. Anxiety
2. Allergies
3. High blood pressure
4. Weak heart due to lack of exercise
Getting in a walk every morning before breakfast, even if it is just once around the block, can help you deal with anxiety and pressures of the day ahead. It can also help lower blood pressure and strengthen your heart muscles too if that is a problem. If you have allergies you can walk inside on a treadmill.
An EKG from your doctor will help to rule out any heart defects.
Bring a cell phone with you in case you feel ill during exercise and need to call for emergency assistance. Good luck and take care.
Q: I think that I might have GERD?
The other day I woke up with a pain in my chest, right behind the sternum. I thought it might be heartburn, because I’ve never had it before. But too many Tums and cups of Pepto Bismol later, I decided to look it up on the internet. I found GERD here: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gerd/symptoms.htm
And the following symptoms match me:
Heart Burn(Maybe, i’m not sure what this is supposed to feel like)
Belching(more than usual)
Pain in the chest
Trouble Swallowing
Tight Throat
Dry Cough(Not very frequent, but more than before)
Increased by eating, but decreased by laying down.
If it is GERD, should I see a doctor?
If not, what could it be?
A: It does sound like the symptoms I experienced before my doctor diagnosed me with GERD. I went through multiple doctors and specialists over the course of 3 years who persistently misdiagnosed it as Stress or Allergies or simply Heartburn before a doctor finally scoped my throat and saw what the real issue was.
I had trouble sleeping because it always felt like my throat was swelling shut — a condition that worsened when I was sick. I sometimes had trouble swallowing small objects, like M&Ms or peanuts, and I had frequent heartburn. I didn’t have much pain, but that was incidental to my condition, luckily.
You should definitely see a GI specialist. They may try you on Nexium or something like that to see if it helps, before they recommend surgery. In my case, drugs did nothing for it, so I did need surgery to correct the reflux — a lap nissen fundoplication. That was 6 years ago, and I’ve been 100% better ever since, with no complaints, pain, or problems.
Q: How do you sing with a chronic cough/mucus buildup?
Help! I need tips.
I have been have sinus/(mucus in the throat symptoms) since probably February…which was….musical season! I’ve been singing all the way till April for the musical, then my coughing began to peak during the performances (my voice had become even worse, I had difficulty reaching high notes smoothly)! Everytime I go to school now, I start to cough. Or if I’m in the cold outside, I may cough. And if I lie down, my speaking voice becomes hoarse. Now that I’m resting at home (vacation), my coughing is diminishing although I do get this random “allergic-like reaction” sometimes (don’t know if it’s allergies, I never had them before). In the morning, the mucus buildup is worse. I guess my singing voice is recovering bit by bit. Yes, I can sing high notes after warming up a little bit, but they are very soft and quiet with my head voice. Belting was one of my best things when it comes to singing…Now…I can’t even belt above a G4. My chest voice sounds absolutely terrible, too. The middle register in particular is where I sound best…it is probably the worst now. I am thinking I might have post nasal drip or LPR reflux (I did notice some GERD symptoms sometimes when I exercise). Any tips to recover my singing voice with this chronic cough/mucus buildup?
A: Go to the doctor.
Sounds like you need medicine (perhaps for allergies).
Q: It feels like a tiny bead is caught or lodged on the right side base of my throat/neck. My symptoms are:?
Bad breath
Dry mouth_no saliva + tingling sensation
Slight pain on right side of throat leading to right ear
Pressure & slight headache
Phlegm build up I cant swallow down.
tiny red blood vessels on right hand wall before the tonsil that are within a paisley shaped pattern.
Burping
Slight dry cough
SYMPTOMS I DONT HAVE:
No white spots on throat
No vomiting
Tonsils look ok
Left side of throat feels ok
No heartburn or stomach pain
Normal stool & urine
Clear nose
Drinking water, hot teas, rinsing with listerine & sleeping hasn’t helped. It’s the third day having this.
Non drinker/smoker & I eat healthy. I have no medical insurance.
Is this GERD or STRICTURE or?
Please help if you know what this is and how to treat it. What specialist should I go see?
I plan to get a blood test done because a year ago I was told by my doctor that I should exercise more due to having moderately high blood sugar. I took his advice & got myself back into shape. Could my blood sugar be doing this? TY
A: Well, when I worked for 4 Ear Nose and Throat doctors, it sounds to me like you may have a blocked salivary duct. I say that because you say there is no saliva. Sometimes they can take care of it at the office. It’s going to depend if they are also surgeons, or just ENT’s who prescribe meds. Meds alone will not be effective as the blockage, (if that is a correct diagnosis) must be removed.
But see an Ear Nose and Throat doctor and skip the middle-man. A regular MD may not pick up on this. If it’s not a blocked duct, you may have a strep infection…but I put my money on the duct.
Good luck..
Q: Help with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)?
I am 22 years old. For about a year now, I have had this chronic clearing of my throat. It is somewhat uncontrollable and it persists for about an hour and happens 4-5 times a day. It feels like my throat is filling up with mucus but when I try to clear my throat nothing really comes up. I just find myself clearing my throat over and over again for about an hour until it passes.
Now, I used to smoke for 5 years, but when this cough came up, I immediately quit. I went to a doctor. They took a throat culture and told me it was GERD. I took some medication for 2 months and it didn’t help. I kept clearing my throat.
I went back after those 2 months and a different doctor told me it was just allergies. She put me on meds and those didn’t help either.
Again, I went to the doctor another month later and they told me it was GERD again. I am currently on a new med, Omeprazole, for almost a month and this doesn’t help either.
Reading up on GERD, it can have symptoms such as chronic cough like I have, but it also comes with acid reflux and heartburn, which I don’t get. If this is the case, what are the chances that I actually have GERD?
If I do, in fact, have GERD, why wont any of the medications I am taking work? What would you suggest I do?
this coughing usually happens when I eat, drink alcohol or workout
A: I have pretty much the same problem as you do. I have GERD but don’t get the heartburn however I know what you mean about the cough, plus I used to have horrible stomach pains. First let me tell you you’ll get better results getting this problem under control through your diet. That cough, from what I’ve read, can be caused by acid in your system. You’ve got to eat more alkaline foods to balance the acid in your stomach. Start by focusing more on fresh fruit, vegetables, soy, honey, and raisins. You can have citrus fruits as well, and whole wheat breads and pastas. Keep away from all meats, alcohol, milk, sodas, eggs, tea, coffee, fish, flour based products, beans and oatmeal. The list of acid forming foods is very long. For a more complete list of what you can and can’t eat just google acid/alkaline diet. Add lemon to your water when you drink as this will help to make your stomach more alkaline too. I found that this helped much more than the medication I was given and now I pretty much don’t have those symptoms anymore. If I do I just drink water with lemon and that pretty much clears things up. I hope this helps you out. Good luck. Also wanted to add that I now can eat any thing I want to, you don’t have to live on that diet. At least I didn’t. I used it till I got my symptoms under control.
Q: After eating, my son sometimes coughs and then throws up about an ounce. Is this a GERD (reflux)symptom?
Or could he just be getting a gag reflex from choking? He starts to cough, choke a little then vomit sometimes during feeding or shortly after. It doesn’t always happen, but its enough to make me worry. About once or twice a day.
My son does have reflux, and I am wondering if I should thicken his formula with cereal. He’s on Nutramigen because they suspect a milk protein allergy but he still has the same symptoms 2 months later on it. He will be 6 months on the 10th. He is gaining weight fine.
I will ask his doctor tomorrow, just interested in other opinions of mothers.
LoL, coffee huh? I think I will stick to the medical professionals.
A: Usually with reflux it is a constant thing meaning it will be going on all day long. Is it spitting up or vomit? Is he on any medication or anything for the reflux? You might need to put him on something stronger? I would suggest to thicken the formula and for now to start on rice cereal or oatmeal in the morning.
Just remember that babies tend to spit up. Which is completely normal. If it was a lot then I would be worried. Before we added oatmeal to my sons formula he would spit up anywhere from 2-4 ounces between bottles. This would happen all day long
Q: WOW am I really that screwed from smoking cigarettes? GERD….? WHAT!@#$%?
OKAY.
I am 20
I have only been smoking since I was 15
I smoke A LOT
I want to quit.
On a side note…My voice is always hoarse. I cough up black stuff. I wheeze and lose my voice a lot. i always have a sore throat. I have many symptoms of GERD (acid reflux) I smoke a lot of caffeine also
I cough up mucous a lot cough a lot and have heart burn a lot. If i quit now will I be okay? Did i do long-term effects? If i have GERD will it go away (acid reflux) I have all the symptoms. Am i okay if I just quit smoking or do I need to go to a doctor?
I am flipping out
oh I can’t really go to the doctor for acid reflux cuz I have no insurance but in my case since the acid reflux is of no other cause then smoking a lot will it go away on its own when I quit?
A: You smoke them too fast, sounds like it. Longer you smoke, harder to quit, study where you smoke more, where you smoke less, hang more around places you smoke less, and give yourself time to quit, took me around 4 years to do it, quit 11 years ago.
Q: Does this sound at all like GERD?
Coughing after waking up, a productive cough. Difficulty breathing and tightness in the chest for the first half hour or so after waking. Symptoms clearly better after using Inhaler prescribed by doctor for Asthma.
Occasional heartburn and a feeling like something is coming up or stuck in the throat area.
A: It could be. My dad recently had an operation for severe GERD. He was on tablets 3x a day to cope with the reflux and whenever he ate anything he got painful heartburn. He didn’t have any difficulty breathing after waking up though.
Did you get bad heartburn/reflux when you were pregnant? I know if you were it makes you more susceptible to GERD.
If you do think you’ve got it, please go and see your dr. It’s a horrible condition that needs to be fixed sooner rather than later if you do have it.
Q: if you have ACID REFLUX or GERD please read?
what are your symptoms? do you think i have it,if i get a full feeling often,a cough, maybe a hoarse throat/voice…nasusea,and sometimes a hot face, but not alot of heart burn but some…..like tonight i stayed up late watchin espn, and had a coke, and now my stomache feel very nauses, and hot….what works best for you? prilosac, zantac, nexium?
A: I am on Nexium. It works for me. It is better to get that checked out as soon as you can. I didn’t and it scared my esophagus. Now, it needs to be stretched twice a year. I get to the point where it closes so much, when I eat, I end up having to throw it up because it gets stuck halfway down. Not fun.
Q: Anyone here diagnosed with LPRD? What are your symptoms?
I’ve had GERD for many years, and I had fundoplication surgery 4 years ago. This and 40 mg Nexium a day have greatly controlled my symptoms, and I’ve been mostly OK.
BUT-3 1/2 months ago, I got MONO. a few weeks in (AFTER initial symptoms of fever, exhaustion, swollen tonsils, and sore throat had mostly faded), my throat started to feel like a lump was in it. This and other symptoms have been present up to present time: constant mild cough, throat-clearing, post-nasal drip in throat, and swollen taste bud on back and sides of tonuge.
An ENT said, without doing a scope, that is was likely LPRD, that the Mono had knocked out my immune system and invited my esophageal reflux up into my throat. He told me to take Nexium TWICE a day.
This was 2 months ago. All these symptoms are still there, and lately I also feel a mild twitching or spasm-like sensation near my Adam’s Apple, on and off. Do these symptoms sound like LPRD, or something else? Thanks.
FYI-I’ve called the ENT to ask him all this, but he says he can no longer help me (not too crazy about him). My options now are to tough it out and see if it gets better, or seek another opinion. My GP tried allergy meds, but most symptoms are still just as bad (i’m a little more dired-out, that’s it). before I see another ENT, I just wanted to know what people with solid diagnoses of this condition felt symptoms-wise, what treatment helped them, and how long it took to feel better. Thanks.
LPRD is laryopharyngeal reflux disease-acid reflux in your throat rather than your esophageal/G.I. tract.
A: I don’t know what LPRD is, or whether you have it, but any time you are concerned and a doctor does not take you seriously, it is time to get another doctor. I would recommend a gastroenterologist. I would also recommend a thyroid specialist. The ENT doctor may actually not be able to help you any further. It may be outside of his area of medicine. You might also want to see an allergy doctor.
