Q: 16 week old infant, symptoms of GERD,no dr will see him?
Ok,none of the pediatricians in this area will see a baby without insurance. My son is exhibiting EVERY symptom of GERD. Is there anything I can do about this on my own? We have a pending medicaid case, but no doctors in this area will even see them with a pending medicaid case. It’s a “pay up front in full or don’t be seen”. Should I just start buying the formula for that, and try it out,and see if he takes to it well? I’m not sure how long my case is going to take to process, and he’s spitting up at EVERY feeding, and eating less. He’s also teething. He’s spitting up a LOT though. Any advice here? Should I buy the formula (ie enfamil AR or something) and try that out until he gets in to see a dr?
He was seen by a pediatrician TWO TIMES since he’s been born, and at that point,it wasn’t yet a problem.
Ok,so I tried the rice cereal bottle thing, and I guess more of his bottles will have to be made that way. He barely spit up any at all,and seems way more content. I started to sit him up after he eats in his swing.
We’ve been making the occasional cereal bottle for awhile now,but more of them are going to have to be made that way,or all of them.

A: Is he fussy when he’s spitting up? Is it projectile or just slowly coming up?

Spitting up is not always reflux, but if it is, there are a few things you can do to help:
Make sure you keep him upright for at least 30 minutes after each feeding
Try to feed him smaller, more frequent meals
Makes sure you burp him frequently
Use a wedge in his crib to keep up propped up when sleeping

Hope those help

Q: Infant GERD?…Looking for encouragement…?
My son is four months old and has had horrible reflux problems since he was a month old. We have seen two different doctors and a GI specialist. He is currently on Zantac and Reglan. Even with medication, he vomits forcefully after most feedings. He is slowly but steadily gaining weight. I know that symptoms associated with GERD usually subside before the baby is one year old, but, I was wondering; for those of you who have had experience with infant GERD, when did your baby start to have less problems?
I have tried different formulas, feeding in an up right position, thickening formula, keeping him elevated (especially after eating), and giving small frequent feedings. Nothing seems to help him :-( He frequently refuses feedings and cries when he tries to eat. I just worry about him sometimes…

A: When my daughter was 10 days old she was diagnosed with GERD. By 4 months the zantac stopped working completely. We switched her to privacid solu tabs around 5months and she was fine after that. Before hand she would throw up non stop even with medicine. She was 6 pounds at birth, and not gaining weight very quickly. At her 6 month checkup she was doing great. We also started her on solid foods at 4 months which really helps to keep the drinks down. Talk to your ped first before doing that however, as most recommend waiting until 6 months. Ask your dr. about prevacid, it worked wonders for us. My daughter is now almost 9 months old, 18 pounds and a very healthy, active, vomit free little girl

Q: Tips for a very gassy 3 week old?
I’m having a lot of gas issues with my 3 week old daughter. She gulps so much air as shes feeding (bottle fed) and no matter how many times we take the bottle away to slow her down, it doesn’t make a difference. She fights being burped by tensing up and crying making it very difficult to get any gas out, and even when she does burp well it doesn’t seem to make a difference. As she sleeps you can hear the gas gurgling in her tummy from across the room. It’s becoming frustrating as she never sleeps soundly and takes forever to put back to bed.

I’ve discussed it with my doctor, who doesn’t seem to think there is an underlying issue. He recommended adding a little sugar to her bottles to help (not sure how it would, but we tried it) It worked for a little while but doesn’t seem to be making a difference anymore.

Other things I’ve tried:
- burping more often (currently she burps about twice every half ounce) and in every position imaginable
- loosening the bottle lids
- tightening the bottle lids
- removing all air from liners
- leaving a little air in the liners to make sure there’s enough airflow for formula to pass
- sitting her up to eat
- sugar
- ovol (makes almost no difference at all)
- ‘bicycling’ her legs
- switching formulas (currently on similac senstive lactose free, it agrees with her better than others were)
- checking all soothers to make sure they weren’t leaking air
- using store bought bottled water vs. boiled tap water

Let me stress – this is not a colic issue- she fusses and wakes up often, but not screaming unrelentingly. She’s overall a fairly content baby. She does have other symptoms suggesting GERD… however my doctor doesn’t believe GERD exists in infants and won’t diagnose… lol.

PLEASE moms, any tips/home remedies/otc medicines/tricks you have, do share! My little girls tummy and my sleep deprivation will thank you! =)

A: My baby was very gassy too. I would lie him down and gently lift his knees and press them oh so gently against his tummy. I did this 4-5 times and he would let out a little fart :-) . Don’t do this when she’s just been fed though. My bub got better with the burping thing. What worked was sitting him on my knee, gently supporting his chin and rubbing him on his back. I wouldn’t give up till a loud burp was heard. Don’t worry, she’ll slowly get the hang of it. Check out this article I found on Baby Fart Aerobics! Good luck! http://www.articlealley.com/article_887972_40.html

Q: Reflux in infant????
Can someone tell me the symptoms of reflux in infants? Our son is one month old and he crys alot, hes a very loud eater, and sometimes he can eat as much as 6-7oz at each feeding and i know thats not normal, i burp him after every 2 oz and at the end of each feeding, i can hear the milk in his tummy , he gets very uncomfortable when being burped, and he throws up alot. Or spits up. Im wondering if he has reflux or GERD. but im not sure of the symptoms. when he throws up he just screams like it hurts. Anyone that can help??? Im going to try and make him an appointment today but wanted opionions. I know they say if they have reflux usually thickening there formula will help with rice cereal but isnt he too young for this? Thanks!!

A: we found out my baby had reflux at 5 weeks, her symtoms were:
while eating she would scream and cry the whole time she was takin the bottle
she spit up after every feeding even more so in the evenings
when she threw up it came out of her nose (and she threw up at least once a day)
while lying flat on her back after eating she would cry
cereal did not help this at all
we took her to the dr, and they did an upper GI on her (dont worry they dont use the scope on babies this small) and perscribed ther Previcid, also we have had to change formula 6 times, when some one finally suggested Enfimil A.R. to me i asked for it and it works great, it has a small amount of cereal in it and expands in their bellys to keep so much of it from coming back up
good luck, refulx in a baby is hard to deal with, there is not a lot you can do for them, my baby is now 16 weeks and we still dont have it 100% under control

Q: My son is sick and the doctors aren’t helping much.?
My son just turned 2 years old and he generally very happy and energetic.

For about 3 and a half weeks now he has been vomiting at night multiple times, 2-3 times per week. He will wake up 3-6 hours after going to bed coughing and vomiting. Sometimes he will have a fever and sometimes he will not. He had a febrile seizure 3 weeks ago when all of this started (he has had them in the past too). We have been to the ER, Walk-in clinic, and the family doctor. Neither seems very concerned or even interested. They all say “oh it’s just a virus”. Sorry, but a virus would not last 3 and a half weeks and only cause symptoms SOMETIMES. This only happens 2-3 times a week and on any other given day of the week he is totally fine and 100% himself. Also, nobody else is getting sick, so that makes me doubt it is a virus. I am 11 weeks pregnant and in general have a pretty crappy immune system, if anyone was gonig to catch a bug it would be me. I also babysit a little boy (21months) who is perfectly fine. I really do not feel as if this is a virus.

PAST MEDICAL HISTORY:
- Colic as an infant
- Reflux as an infant, medication did not help
-Suspected Asthma since he was 7 months old, takes Flovent and Ventolin inhalers.
-Febrile seizures (3 since he was 10 months)

I am starting to wonder if maybe he still has reflux or GERD. He does cough a lot and have “sour burps” (spits up soem then swallows it). He also sometimes has very smelly sour breath.

GERD would not bring on a fever though?

Any ideas, and help is appreciated.
Sorry about the typos, I am running on about 2 hours of sleep :(
He is in a big boy bed, not elevating him. They said the seizure are brought on by fevers and are completely normal in children under 5 and do not need to be treated, other that giving tylenol to bring the fever down. They have never drawn blood, just a few urine tests. I do need a referral to a specialist form my doctor, but not for insurance (Canadian here). I saw the specialist when I was younger and my son saw him too when he was about 9 months. He tried meds for the reflux but nothing helped they said oh well he will grow out of it. Saw the best pediatric gastroentrologist in Ontario.

A: Follow your gut………keep taking him in. That is NOT normal. If you need to, find a different pediatrician. I can’t believe they are ignoring his symptoms! Poor little guy…………..
