Q: Is constipation, chest congestion, being light-headed & feeling food hard to swallow symptoms of GERD?
I have feelings of lumps in my throat & chest. I also constantly have a bad taste in my mouth & bad breath. Feelings of extra or rapid heartbeats, sometimes dizzy, weakness in my arms and /or legs, having to catch my breath & other discomfort.

A: The symptoms for GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder which is synonymous with Anti-Reflux Disorder). The symptoms are :
1. heartburn, the primary system described as a burning sensation that may radiate to the neck, jaw or back
2. Pain aggravated by bending over, straining or lying in recumbent position
3. Pain recurring after each meal and lasting fro 20 mins to 2 hours
4. Regurgitation not related to belching or nausea, warm fluid traveling up the throat, resulting in sour or bitter taste
5. Water brash (reflex salivary hyper-secretion)
6. Difficulty and painful swallowing
7. Chest pain from esophageal spasm
8. Belching and a feeling of flatulence or bloating after eating

You have your symptoms of GERD, however you have some symptoms that are not related, in fact some seem cardiac related and I would suggest to go see your doctor ASAP and get a thorough check up. Don’t allow them to just treat your symptoms but follow through for a diagnosis. And follow the instructions you are given, if they don’t work after giving it ample time then continue to voice your concern, don’t let a doctor ever tell you you are not feeling what you know you are feeling. Patients have rights but you must be diligent about getting results.

Q: anyone with GERD? Can you describe your symptoms?
Hi there! I’m a 21 year old Female who was recently diagnosed with GERD. I took EKG’s, and did regular blood pressure examinations (because i went to the ER twice thinking i was having a heart attack) At first they attributed my pains to anxiety, but i wasn’t convinced and kept returning. They then diagnosed me as having GERD, but when i google GERD symptoms, i don’t have any of those symptoms, OR i have extra symptoms. I do experience chest pain, it’s usually right behind my sternum and in my ribs. I also do frequently burp or feel like i have to burp, or feel like i constantly have something in my throat. Also people have told me that my voice sounds different (more raspy) and GERD is known to change voices. I have been taking prilosec for my symptoms, it helps but hasn’t taken the pain away completely. I also have frequent pain in my back, neck, jaw, ears, head, and arms. That is a symptom that isn’t common with GERD. The pain on a scale of 1-10 isn’t more than a 5, but when it all hits me at once it is pretty scary and the pain can be about an 8 or a 9. Everytime i go to the ER though, they always say that i’m okay, but they haven’t run any diagnostic tests on my GERD. So if you have GERD or symptoms similar to these can you describe them for me, cause i’m still not convinced i have that problem.

A: If you’re having severe pain that radiates to your back, neck and jaw, that sounds like when I had gallstones. I have GERD and the prilosec takes it away completely. And GERD doesn’t make you feel pain on that type of scale. It feels mostly like your stomach is one big ball of acid.

I hope you feel better soon!

Q: Can GERD symptoms cause chest pain?
First, I HAVE been to my doc a thousand times over and he doesnt know where the chest pain comes from, and its certainly not panic attacks. When i get the chest pains (generally between my breastbone), i have the urge to burp and my throat swells a little, making it more difficult to swallow. Is this consistent with what GERD could possibly cause?

A: It may be, but a few things may need to be ruled out first. GERD can cause chest pain and is caused by diet (fried foods, acidic foods like spaghetti sauce and pizza), smoking, drinking pop, obesity and inactivity. Does your throat get hoarse? Does eating make the pain better or worse? Also, if this hasn’t been done already you may want to get a test for H. Pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.

Q: Can my GERD cause a bad odor/taste that only I can detect?
I have GERD and the usual GERD symptoms, along with a number of rarer symptoms my ENT and I seem to agree are caused by it, including occasional earaches and sinus aches, throat clearing, bitter taste in mouth, and an undescribable pungent odor only I can smell. Could the odor be HCl acid? HCl fumes? Esophageal scar tissue? It’s the same odor all the time, so I don’t think it’s stomach contents. It definitely improves slightly with H2 Blockers and temporarily with antacids, but is usually on and off throughout the day, every day. Sinuses are clean, uninflamed, uninfected. I am in excellent health, despite GERD. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

A: You may also have LPR (laryngeal pharyngeal reflux). The taste you’re talking about is the stomach acid. The medications may not be controlling the GERD as well as you’d hoped. Your ENT may want to increase your Rx dosage. Or, you might get an upper GI or endioscopy to determine if it’s worse then it was previously. There is also the option of surgery.

A: ABSOLUTELY – i have stomach ulcers and when they flare up it feels like hell in my chest – however if you have shortness of breath at the same time call 911 !!!

Q: Do I have acid reflux/GERD? (Symptoms listed in details)?
Hey. I’m a singer, and I’m getting worried because recently, my range has been deteriorating and I don’t know why. But recently I’ve figured that I may have acid reflux.

I have been waking up with a throat so soar I can barely speak. Every morning, without fail, this has been happening. Also, I notice that my tongue gets a little white and foamy sometimes. In addition, sometimes it will randomly feel like there’s a fiery volcano erupting in my throat.

Singing-wise, my belting range has been stomped on and crushed. I used to be able to belt up to a G4 and now I struggle on/past D4. Whatever this is needs to go away NOW.

My first question is, does this mean I have acid reflux / GERD?

My second question is for singers: If you are a singer who has had acid reflux problems, where you able to overcome them or were your chords permanently damaged?

Third question: Besides antibiotics, are there any household remedies for acid reflux I should try? If I have it?

Thanks.

A: It sounds like thats exactly what you have, You need to go to a gastroenterologist. He or she can put you on an acid inhibitor to stop the acid reflux.

Q: Bad Breath, Throat always dry, always swallowing, feels like something is stuck in my throat, What is wrong?
I had GERD and was on rabeprazole medication for 3 months and it went away but I am having the same throat symptoms. I think it may be allergies or post nasal drip but I am not sure. Does anyone out there have this?

A: Even though you may not have heartburn, it is entirely possible (even probable) that the GERD is rearing its ugly head again.
The muscles at the top of the esophagus clamp shut in order to protect the airway from the reflux and give the sensation of having a lump, or something stuck, in the throat.
The bad breath is very likely due to stomach acid making its way up to your throat when you sleep.
You are always swallowing because a small bolus (the amount is less than a tsp) of saliva isn’t enough material to get those tight upper esophageal muscles to relax enough for it to pass through. I’m sure it must be a problem swallowing firm foods like bread and meat. Large boluses (gulps) of liquid are typically the easiest to swallow when GERD is present.
Go back on the medicine. If you don’t have the prescription, you can always try one of the over-the-counter medicines Pepcid, Prilosec, or Zantac.
Google “reflux precautions” to find out more.

Q: It feels like a tiny bead is caught or lodged on the right side base of my throat/neck. My symptoms are:?
Bad breath
Dry mouth_no saliva + tingling sensation
Slight pain on right side of throat leading to right ear
Pressure & slight headache
Phlegm build up I cant swallow down.
tiny red blood vessels on right hand wall before the tonsil that are within a paisley shaped pattern.
Burping
Slight dry cough

SYMPTOMS I DONT HAVE:
No white spots on throat
No vomiting
Tonsils look ok
Left side of throat feels ok
No heartburn or stomach pain
Normal stool & urine
Clear nose

Drinking water, hot teas, rinsing with listerine & sleeping hasn’t helped. It’s the third day having this.

Non drinker/smoker & I eat healthy. I have no medical insurance.

Is this GERD or STRICTURE or?

Please help if you know what this is and how to treat it. What specialist should I go see?

I plan to get a blood test done because a year ago I was told by my doctor that I should exercise more due to having moderately high blood sugar. I took his advice & got myself back into shape. Could my blood sugar be doing this? TY

A: Well, when I worked for 4 Ear Nose and Throat doctors, it sounds to me like you may have a blocked salivary duct. I say that because you say there is no saliva. Sometimes they can take care of it at the office. It’s going to depend if they are also surgeons, or just ENT’s who prescribe meds. Meds alone will not be effective as the blockage, (if that is a correct diagnosis) must be removed.

But see an Ear Nose and Throat doctor and skip the middle-man. A regular MD may not pick up on this. If it’s not a blocked duct, you may have a strep infection…but I put my money on the duct.

Good luck..

Q: Can gerd cause sinus like symptoms?
I started out with conjestion and felt like had to constatly clear my throat and panic attacks like i couldn’t breath and then it went to not being able to swallow food choking on the food to extreme heartburn and back pain and burning. now i just have a froggy throat burning sensation in my throat and dry stuffy nose slightly and extreme heartburn and bloated stomach . Can anyone tell me what this is?

A: GERD won’t effect the nasal passages unless you are sleeping with your head lower than your stomach. Try raising the head of your bed by putting something under the feet. 4 to 6 inches will help a lot. You can have throat problems because the acid is damaging the esophagus You need to go to a gastroenterologist and have an endo done to see how much damage is done and he can put you on medication for it.

Q: I Need some help in losing GERD?
I leave Oct. 6th for my AIT in the army. I have been to the doctor about the “lump in my throat” and he said it was Post Nasal Drip. Well its been 2 months and its still there and as i read more it seems i have symptoms of GERD ( the only symptom i have is the lump in my throat.) Can anyone share with me some remedies on how to get rid of this “lump in my throat”? I am very healthy and in shape. I just need some help its annoying! Thanks

A: Has your doctor checked your thyroid, a lump in the throat area could be a sign of a problem with your thyroid. GERD is usually more specific and you get acid reflux and heartburn. You might want to get a second opinion.

Q: Is this GERD / acid reflux Symptoms?
Hello, i wonder if burping all the time and a warm full feeling in the back of your throat when burping could be acid reflux? I am pregnant and have had a sore throat for a while and excessive mucus in my throat, and contstant throat clearing. been to the docs and he says its Acid reflux but i dont get heartburn so i am confused

xx

A: My Dad has this condition and he never got heartburn at all. Worse; he had great difficulty in swallowing as the years went by, and could only do so after taking some sort of muscle relaxant. Listen to your doctor on this one :) Good luck…

Q: Extreme burning sensation in throat with back pain?
I suddenly felt as if my throat was constricting and had a burning sensation-extremely painful. The pain also radiated into my back. I was simply sitting and reading and it happened very quickly and lasted a minute or a little longer. Now, my back feels sore and my throat is very irritated and occasion still burning. Can GERD come on that quickly and have those symptoms?

A: Yes, GERD can come on pretty quickly as far as symptoms especially if certain foods more than others might be triggering the symptoms. I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

Q: Do I have GERD? I have most symptoms but not all?
I’ve been reading online about GERD because I always feel like I’ve got something stuck at the bottom of my throat
it’a not painful or suffocating or anything, it’s just like
there
and sometimes when it’s there and I eat something, it like
come’s back up

but I’ve only had heartburn like twice as a kid

my annual physical is in 3 weeks and I’ll ask my doctor then but I just want to know what’s up first

A: Doing research is always the best. Also, it may be a good idea to write down everytime you notice a symptom along with what you eat. My husband has GERD and the doctor wanted him to make a chart of when he felt bad and also what he ate for about a week. You should have plenty of time to do this and it will also help to diagnose you.
This way you don’t have to go home make a chart and then come back to get a presciption for something.

Q: WOW am I really that screwed from smoking cigarettes? GERD….? WHAT!@#$%?
OKAY.

I am 20

I have only been smoking since I was 15

I smoke A LOT

I want to quit.

On a side note…My voice is always hoarse. I cough up black stuff. I wheeze and lose my voice a lot. i always have a sore throat. I have many symptoms of GERD (acid reflux) I smoke a lot of caffeine also
I cough up mucous a lot cough a lot and have heart burn a lot. If i quit now will I be okay? Did i do long-term effects? If i have GERD will it go away (acid reflux) I have all the symptoms. Am i okay if I just quit smoking or do I need to go to a doctor?

I am flipping out
oh I can’t really go to the doctor for acid reflux cuz I have no insurance but in my case since the acid reflux is of no other cause then smoking a lot will it go away on its own when I quit?

A: You smoke them too fast, sounds like it. Longer you smoke, harder to quit, study where you smoke more, where you smoke less, hang more around places you smoke less, and give yourself time to quit, took me around 4 years to do it, quit 11 years ago.

Q: I think that I might have GERD?
The other day I woke up with a pain in my chest, right behind the sternum. I thought it might be heartburn, because I’ve never had it before. But too many Tums and cups of Pepto Bismol later, I decided to look it up on the internet. I found GERD here: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gerd/symptoms.htm

And the following symptoms match me:
Heart Burn(Maybe, i’m not sure what this is supposed to feel like)
Belching(more than usual)
Pain in the chest
Trouble Swallowing
Tight Throat
Dry Cough(Not very frequent, but more than before)
Increased by eating, but decreased by laying down.

If it is GERD, should I see a doctor?
If not, what could it be?

A: It does sound like the symptoms I experienced before my doctor diagnosed me with GERD. I went through multiple doctors and specialists over the course of 3 years who persistently misdiagnosed it as Stress or Allergies or simply Heartburn before a doctor finally scoped my throat and saw what the real issue was.

I had trouble sleeping because it always felt like my throat was swelling shut — a condition that worsened when I was sick. I sometimes had trouble swallowing small objects, like M&Ms or peanuts, and I had frequent heartburn. I didn’t have much pain, but that was incidental to my condition, luckily.

You should definitely see a GI specialist. They may try you on Nexium or something like that to see if it helps, before they recommend surgery. In my case, drugs did nothing for it, so I did need surgery to correct the reflux — a lap nissen fundoplication. That was 6 years ago, and I’ve been 100% better ever since, with no complaints, pain, or problems.
