Q: Could prescription severe acid reflux (GERD) medicines possibly mask the symptoms of stomach cancer?
Prescriptions such as Prevacid, Nexium, and Prilosec.
A: I hope not, but then again any type of prescription medication has side effects with other parts of the body. Make sure you find out for sure if those medications you take causes stomach cancer.
Just keep in mind that pharmaceutical companies & doctors are not God. 8-D
Q: More severe gerd maybe?
I have gerd. I’ve never actually went to a regular doctor but have been in and out of emergency rooms for about 6 years. About 5 years ago, one of the times I had went, the ER doctor told me he thought I had acid reflux. For the longest time I took ranitidine and it worked well. When I lost a lot of weight and was down to 118 I hardly ever had problems. But now, in the past year it seems to be worse. What is really weird to me is it seems it has gotten alot worse since I’ve quit smoking and drinking sodas all together. I thought that I would feel better. My chest hurts and burns at least everyday at some point. I burp alot and can feel a bubbling coming up my chest. I also feel some pain in my arms. I’m just assuming I don’t have any heart problems since I had a chest x-ray done in March and the doctor didn’t say anything was wrong. He did say I had a big ball of gas in my stomach. I do have anxiety so when it does get worse I tend to panic. Does anyone get the same symptoms?
A: Is it possible that you are lactose intolerant?? Lactose intolerance can rear it’s ugly head really at any stage of our lives and symptoms of it are belching and gassiness, acid reflux, ribbony shaped and pellet shaped stools, mucousy stools, constipation and digestive troubles such as bloating and cramping, headaches and moodiness and irritability, insomnia, w*et farting (sorry no other way to put it) ………. have you been eating more milk and dairy products lately?? Maybe this is the culprit. Try cutting out milk and dairy products for a few days and pump up your intake of other foods rich in calcium such as leafy and green vegies, sardines, salmon, tofu, dried beans, kale, broccolli and collard greens and also increase your intake of foods rich in vitamin D ie ~ salmon or tuna ……… or simply get 10 – 15 minutes of safe sun exposure daily (vitamin D is known as the subnshine vitamin) …. vitamin D is essential for the effective absorption of Calcium ………… this could be just the right remedy for you, as without enough calcium you will have plenty of digestive troubles, headaches and insomnia and also achy bones ………. if you are lactose intolerant and keep eating foods such as milk and dairy then you would be inhibiting your calcium absorption and also inhibiting absorption of other vital vitamins and minerals ……. try it buddy, you’ve got nothing to lose by ditching the milk and dairy and pumping up your intake of lactose free calcium and vitamin D rich foods or sunshine…… except of course all the ghastly burning sensatins, tummy aches, gassiness and constipation….. ♥
Don’t forget to drink loads of fresh filtered water and cut back on the coffee, tea and alcohol (if you drink any) as all these will dehydrate you terribly and rob you of your precious B complex of vitamins too…….. also, take a multi B complex supplement too to bolster a healthy neural, digestive and immune sytstem ♥ Ensure you get a B complex that includes all the B’s ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12, folate etc…. as they all work best as a group♥
hope i helped a bit mate ♥

Q: hiatal hernia symptoms?
I’m wondering if I might have a hiatal hernia. I have been taking protonix for GERD for 8 weeks and my reflux has actually gotten worse. I have been avoiding all the foods you’re not supposed to eat with GERD, but everything causes me heartburn, even bread or plain crackers. In the past few days, I’ve been having chest pains on my left side that feels like a burning, sore, heaviness, that is pretty constant. I have an appointment with a GI doc a week from today to have an endoscopy. On a side note, I’m 28 and 100 lbs so weight is not an issue. Could this be a hiatal hernia or just severe GERD? Have you had chest pain or what are some other symptoms you have had? Also, what causes hernias?
Thanks
A: Click on this http://www.gicare.com/pated/ecdgs08.htm and read about hiatus hernias (also called hiatal hernias). This will answer your questions.
Q: GERD or Gallbladder?
My symptoms started as dyspepsia: bloating, nausea, early fullness. It felt like I swallowed a ball that lodged in my esophagus causing pressure in my throat.I couldnt eat more than a cup of food w/o feeling severely ill. I went to the doctor who did blood tests and an ultrasound which both came back normal. He suspected Gallbladder disease, so he ordered a Hiatus scan which showed my gallbladder was working at 12%. One surgeon wants to take it out immediately, the 2nd one thinks I have GERD and shouldn’t. Now, here’s more to the puzzle– I was taking Minocin for acne and I have read that it can damage your stomach/esophagus and I’ve suggested this to the doctors but they blow me off everytime. After I stopped taking the medication my dyspepsia and nausea/etc slowly went away. Could that have caused the GERD like symptom?. The only symptoms I have now are severe nausea/sharp pains after eating fatty foods. The sharp pain IS on my left side, although I think its residual…
A: If that pain assosiated with food continue along with the symtom that you explain as having a tennis ball lodged in your esophagus then I would have to say that that is Gerd.
I suffer from Gerd, and have for several years and that is exacly what I think it is.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Q: Does anyone know anything about GERD?
GERD is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and my mum has it. i suffer from all the same symptoms as she does and what is connected to GERD. eg, heartburn, severe stomach cramps, chest pain, nausea and sore throat. Ive been to the doctors and had blood tests yet nothing seems to be showing up. the doctor (who isn’t very good i think) told me i have to get on with the pain and discomfort forever…
what should i do ?
A: Blood tests aren’t going to show anything. If he thinks he can diagnose GERD with blood tests, then I don’t think that doctor is very good either.
The way it is diagnosed is as follows: You go see a GI doctor. They will schedule an upper GI scope to check for hernia and acid damage, likely followed by a sphincter manometry test, and 24 hour pH monitor above the top valve of the stomach.
The manometry test involves injection of a numbing goo into one nostril. A tube with pressure sensors is then guided down your throat through that nostril and you drink water lying down and upright as they slowly pull the tube out. It checks for weak sphincters.
The 24 pH test is the fun part. A long wire electrode is inserted in that nostril, taped into position, and then you keep a diary of symptoms (burning, reflux, burping, pain, coughing) and click a button on the monitor when you experience them.
After that, you may be recommended for Nissen fundoplication, which is where they wrap the fundus of the stomach around the esophagus underneath the diaphragm, thereby creating a manmade tight sphincter.
Q: gerd relating to anxiety?
i have a severe case of gerd due to certain foods and axiety/panic attacks. yes, i do avoid the triggering foods and i have also tried prevacid, zantac, pepcid ac with little to no help. i get very bad gerd when it comes to anxiety, in which i face everyday, and i want to know of there is anyone who deals with it the same way as i.
i am thinking of going for prilosec. ive heard it is very good but i cant tell if it is coming from people who dont have the same symptoms as i do. can anyone please help me?
its just too hard for me. please be sincere and kind…thank you everyone.
uh . i apparently wrote it because i know what i’m talking about
A: Stress is the reason not anxiety, anxiety cause stress which can cause complications with digestion.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Q: GERD/Acid Reflux problems…?
I have had severe symptoms with acid reflux. At times I wake up with a fluid coming out my nose and sometimes I wake up with the sensation of drowining and then I’m in the bathroom trying to cough the burning sensation out of my throat.
I am on nexium 40mg daily. I take it at 3pm and eat my last meal at 4:30pm. The thing is that I go to bed around 10pm and still wake up with these symptoms that really hurt and interrupt my sleep. There are times I am chewing tums, eating a few crackers, drinking pepto or even downstairs drinking straight out the milk jug just to get some relieve and nothing helps. I stay away from spicy foods/carbonated bevereages and like I said I eat my last meal at 4:30, sometimes 5 but go to bed 5–6 hours later and still have this problem.
I have taken many prescribed meds, and the little purple pill (nexium) doesnt even help anymore. Do you think that surgery for this might be my only option? If so, what are the pros/cons to it.
Thanks, and sorry this was so long. I just cant take it anymore.
BTW….. I am 37 years old
A: I had GERD for 12 years… seemed like I tried EVERYthing… until my GI doc put me on a brand new (FDA-approved in Jan ‘09) med called KAPIDEX. I figured it would work just as well (or NOT well) as the rest… but she was right… it’s like a miracle drug! I haven’t had heartburn in months! it’s also good for treating erosive esophagitis.
as for surgery… it depends upon your age. I’m only 27 and my doc said they won’t do it until you are older. she also said that while the surgery is initially very effective, that there is a high likelihood of it reversing itself (i.e. “slipping”). my friend is 41 and he just had the surgery a few months ago, but it was more for his voice than for the actual reflux. he definitely has less heartburn, but it’s not all gone… so it’s definitely not a miracle cure.
Q: Can severe acid reflux cause breathing difficulties after eating?
acid reflux, GERD, breathing difficulty, breathing difficulties after eating, eating, acid reflux and breathing, asthma-like symptoms only after eating, severe acid reflux
A: YES, there is a condition that doctors like to call psuedoasthma and it is from acid reflux. I have had problems for years with reflux and this last time that i was pregnant i had to use an inhaler. My baby has it too, he has had numerous hospitalizations from reflux that caused asthma like problems.
see a doctor they need to do a scope of your stomach and put u on some stronger meds like prevacid…
Q: mistaken hiatel hernia on ct scan?
i have been having severe chest pain and gerd symptoms with out heart burn…had a ct scan that showed i had hiatel hernia “a lrage one”, but just had an upper endoscopy and NO hiatel hernia, my question is what could the doctor think was a hiatel hernia but is not?? of course i am goona see the doc but i have to wait two weeks and would like to have a idea… i also have been have weird neurological symptoms mydoc can not explain – severe weakness, weakness in my jaw muscle etc…
A: you might have a sliding hiatal hernia that moves up and down
Q: What do my symptoms mean?
I understand that probably no one on here is a doctor.. but I figured I’d see what these mixed symptoms mean. I can’t go get it checked out without insurance (lost it when I got married and very expensive to get again)..
Sometimes I mixed symptoms.. Hx includes, Rheumatoid arthritis, Gerd… etc
I get dizzy/falling out spells. I don’t completely pass out but I get incoherent and disoriented. My blood sugar has dropped before and then gotten high but its usually completely normal. At about 87-94 I start getting extremely nauseated, tired, and that dizzy stuff starts.
My feet feel tingley/numb and so do my thighs and hands sometimes. Sometimes my eyes twitch on their own and hurt too. I also choke on my own spit alot and have problems swallowing. Also have severe headaches, sensitivity to light, and get depressed sometimes and aggravated easier than usual.
I sometimes have severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. The doctor said I have gallbladder sludge and a septated gallbladder and recommends it being removed.. I thought diet and exercise would help but to no avail.. The pain also radiates to the left stomach area like an ulcer.
I know its not possible to have probs with all these body systems.. But this is the truth.. I havent been to a dr in years prior to this and its possible something isn’t normal, but I dunno.
A: I have been studying Multiple Sclerosis for Biology and you have alot of the symptoms =[
Q: Gerd cancer?
Anyone here with gerd?i know theres a link to cancer, does this worry you?is it common?thanks also, could you also tell me what your initial symptoms were before diagnosis?was the heartburn severe?did it last long or on and off?
A: I have had it all my life, and it has only got progressively worse. It was dormant at first until I (by means of Caffeine) aggravated the situation causing it to become full blown. As far as the cancer or Barrett’s esophagus, I do not fear it, I am at year 18 with reflux have been in and out of the hospital because of it, and I am planning on getting it. My thoughts on that are well i have no choice in that matter might as well learn to take it now so that the anxiety does not affect me in the future. Here is some information that I have complied to help people, I hope that it can help to cure you, or ease you suffering.

G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.

Q: GERD/acid reflux leading to other conditions.?
Hi, for the last 2 years I have suffered through acid reflux/GERD which was originally caused by H. Pylori. The reflux symptoms have lessoned quite a bit, from very severe to mild now. I had a homeopathic doctor recommend me to take PH Balance by Pascoe, which alkalizes your body, so for the past 2 months I have been taking this and its helped out a lot. They also said to drink aloe vera juice which helps heal the damaged tissue. The problem is, now that I don’t experience the heartburn anymore(mildly), I am now always bloated, constipated, and have a weird sensation on the right side of my abdomen, it feels like theirs a lot of pressure. I was also getting a lot of red rashes around my body, but that seems to have gone away now.
I was just wondering if GERD/acid reflux can lead to any other conditions?
If anyone reads this, and wants to try out the PH Balance pills, they should know that it will take about 2 weeks for you to notice any changes. You also cannot just take the pills and eat lots of acidic foods, and expect your body to alkalize. I suggest reading more about acid and alkaline foods. Make sure your Aloe Vera juice is organic, and don’t drink it for too long, because it is also a natural laxative, and you do not want your body to adapt to needing the laxative all the time.
A: It can lead to other things, depends on how severe your condition is, your age, and how long you had the disease. But I think you should go see a digestive specialist in your case and talk to him about your concerns he might have an EGD done to rule out other conditions caused by GERD. I didn’t know all that stuff can calm acid reflux. Gotta buy me some aloe vera! I tried everything with GERD and nothing seems to work tremendously so the doctor is going to do that EGD test for me.
Q: Can someone provide me with some info on H. PYLORI, symptoms, treatment?
I was diagnosed and treated with a 10 day course of antibiotic treatment, no less than a week later the symptoms returned. I have moderate to severe episodes of nausea in the pit of my stomach and sometimes the pain is unbearable. I’m belching up lots of gas, my belly tends to become bloated from time to time and I’ve lost about 7 pounds within the last seven 7 months. I think i was misdiagnosed, my initial visit i was given pepcid, then prilosec for GERD which i am still taking. Should my doctor recheck to see if the H. PYLORI has resolved. Please advise.
A: I’m sorry you feel so bad. You sound like a classic case of H.Pylori. Those poor folks have all your symptoms and ulcer symptoms/complaints. The patients I have had contact with have had to take antibiotics for longer than 3 weeks, Usually 3 to 5 weeks. They are also given one of the Proton pump drugs (Prilosec/Prevacid/Protonix/Nexium or Aciphex) to take along with the antibiotic.
I’d call your Dr. again and tell him how you feel and ask for more treatment, and good luck , I hope you feel better.
Q: Is GERD similar to Pancreatitis?
I have had severe pain in both sides, as well as in the stomach, causing me to not eat, and it got so bad that I went to the doctor. He told me that because I said I got heartburn once, despite all of my other symptoms and how I was crying from the pain, it was GERD. I do not have a problem with heartburn, but I do drink a lot, and I told him this, which is why I was concerned that it was my kidneys, pancreas, or liver. I already have had my gallbladder and appendix out so it’s not that. I have been taking the meds for GERD to no avail and am still in a lot of pain. My concern is that I have been misdiagnosed and I have a serious problem and I don’t know what to do.
A: If it was pancreatic then every time you drank it would hurt then too. GERDS would be the spasms of the digestive system, allowing backflow of gastric juices to irritate the esophagus. Ulcers from alcohol and decreased absorbtion could be problem. Its your money tell him you want more tests you don’t think the treatment is working. Just to let you in on a secret, if you have a alcohol problem, they are not going to prescribe pain medication until last resort because you already have a addictive tendancy, sorry just the plain truth. Seen it to many times.
Q: Does this sound like a hiatal hernia to you? Heart palpitations after eating, irregular heartbeat, GERD?
My husband started having heart palpitations and a heavily-pounding heart about a week ago, after eating every meal. He has had severe heartburn basically his whole life and was diagnosed with Acid Reflex and GERD a few years ago. He takes OTC heartburn pills everyday to help calm the heartburn, since he gets it every day. He went into the hospital yesterday and the hospital did an EKG, took blood and ordered a chest x-ray, and everything was normal, aside from his heart palpitating, or beating irregularly. This morning, they did an Electro Cardiogram and gave that to a cardiologist, but we haven’t heard anything back. We also noticed that the heart problems seem to calm down at night and happen much less at night, and that if he puts his arms above his head, his heartbeat returns to normal, which made me think he might have a Hiatal Hernia. It seems like it would make sense if he had a hiatal hernia and raised his arms above his head for his heart beat to return to normal, since his upper torso would be getting pulled upward, and away from his stomach. He hasn’t been having any other symptoms except for the funny heartbeat. In the past few days, he has cut out all caffeine, all heavy foods, a lot of salt, and has been eating much lighter foods, but it is not helping. He mentioned a hiatal hernia possibly being the cause of the problem, but the doctors didn’t say anything, so he feels like they aren’t even going to check, even though I know GERD can be associated with a hiatal hernia. What does it sound like to you? Any suggestions? One other mention, he did have an ulcer about 10-12 years ago, but we’re not sure if he still has it. He doesn’t have insurance, so he can only go to a hospital to get medical care without having to pay hundreds up front for medical care from a doctor at an office or a specialist.
A: He has what is called Deglutition(Swallowing-induced) tachyarrhythmia.
Deglutition tachyarrhythmia, first reported in 1926 by Sakai and Mori, is a rare clinical entity. Vagal reflex has been supposed to be responsible for the induction of the arrhythmia. The mechanism of the swallowing-induced arrhythmia might be related to a sympathetic reflex.
# Cases: syncope caused by swallowing-induced cardiac arrhythmia is an uncommon condition. The recognition of this syndrome is paramount but often difficult. We report three cases of deglutition syncope evaluated at our institution over a three-year period. Two patients had distal esophageal (Schatzki) ring and two had hypertensive peristaltic waves (commonly referred to as “nutcracker esophagus”), neither of which had been described before in association with deglutition syncope. Two patients underwent placement of a demand cardiac pacemaker with subsequent resolution of their syncopal symptoms.

# Cases:Three cases with supraventricular tachyarrhythmias related to oesophageal transit are reported. A 61 year old man had episodes of atrial tachycardia on each swallow of food but not liquid;
http://heart.bmj.com/content/81/3/313.abstract
Deglutition induced supraventricular tachycardia is an uncommon condition postulated to be a vagally mediated phenomenon due to mechanical stimulation. Patients usually present with mild symptoms or may have severe debilitating symptoms.
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118532392/abstract
The above extracts are only to show that a rare condition does exist which could be the case with your husband. All you got to do is to point out the possibility of ‘Deglutition(Swallowing-induced) tachyarrhythmia’ to your doctor.
GERD is a different issue, hiatus hernia or not. The focus now is on what you said, “My husband started having heart palpitations and a heavily-pounding heart about a week ago, after eating every meal.”
