Q: Can it be an ulcer or GERD? I get really BAD heartburn and indigestion and it will last for days at a time?
Then I will not have any symptoms for weeks or months, and then it starts again. Also with the really bad hearturn my saliva really starts to fill my mouth to where I almost drool Yuk I know. I also get really tired. What could it be?

A: it is definitely gerd, might also be an ulcer, and both are obviously triggered by diet or stress levels or both combining. See a doctor and get treatment, either one can have serious consequences down the road.

Q: bad pregnancy symptoms then gone?
hi everyone-

I guess i am like 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant. i had all the symptoms, i mean nasuea, vommitting, heartburn, indigestion, sore boobs, tired!!!!, and emotional.
I woke up this morning with cramps (like period cramps), and my symptoms aren’t as bad. the heartburn stopped about 2 days ago. and my boobs are really sore anymore. and no nasuea for like 4 days? is this just lucky to not have the symptoms, or is it a sign i’m gona have a miscarriage?

thanks
i’m really grochy too!!! and emotional crying alot! and then this mornng i woke up in a good mood?! and was perky and ready to get out of bed, when for the past week or two i couldn’t drag myself out of bed at all!

A: It’s normal for your symptoms to go away…and they may even come back. I don’t think it’s signs of a miscarrage. If the cramps get severe or you start bleeding then get checked but symptoms going away are normal.

Q: have u ever had heartburn so bad that u considered going to the hospital? could this b symptoms of preeclamsia
i’m 26 weeks pregnant by the way. i read that preeclamsia signs can be severe upper abdominal pain. i plan on calling the doc tomorrow since this has happened 3 times in the last couple of weeks

A: I had heartburn so bad with my son (he;s 12 now) I thought I was going to die! It burned up in my throat so bad,,,I remember not being able to swallow or sleep!!!
I would call the doctor just to make sure but try and relax..

God Bless you and Good Luck!!!

Q: What bad pregnancy symptoms are you having?
Im having: 24 hour heartburn, Breasts leaking colostrum, lack of sleep at night, Gestational diabetes, stretch marks, strong braxton hicks especially if I walk too much, missy kicking me in my side and causing discomfort, not being able to sit comfortably due to her bum poking my ribs, spotty skin the list is endless…what are you guys suffering? You have my utmost sympathy!!!!!
Im 30 weeks on Sunday.
Come on girls lets have a good old whinge!!!!

Despite all this I actually love being pregnant!!!

A: oooooo now let me see :) im also nearly 30 weeks (monday) all started with severe morning sickness which lasted until 16 weeks which i had to get medication for , then migraines 24/7 (again more pills!) , constant heartburn, anemic, hospitalized a few weeks ago due to severe dehydration and sickness, stretchmarks making me miserable, and now sore ribs which have started the past few days :(
just think hun we are almost on the home stretch! nearly there :)

Q: Help with these symptoms…..started heartburn then sore throat and then coughing now…….?
Okay this all started last Monday (a week ago today). I ate lunch and within an hour I had terribly bad heartburn. I have been diagnosed with Acid Reflux (GE-RD) but that was 8 or 9 years ago and have had no problems in 5 years. Anyway, heartburn first then about 30 minutes of that my throat started burning so bad that I thought the heartburn had caused it (maybe acid burn my throat). The sore throat or burning went on for all that evening, the next day and finally by Wednesday after lunch it had subsided but I started coughing and feeling like I was getting a chest cold. After a day or so of that it all went in my nose, ears and throat. I’m coughing, runny nose, but now for the super weird thing……..I have started breaking out all over my face, my neck, chest and even in my hair. The rash is mostly small bumps but in a few places they are more like pimples. I have never had a problem with pimples…if I did it was one or two and that was during that time of the month. I know all this is a lot of information but I went to the doctor’s office today and couldn’t even get a parking place(it’s a walk in type thing) I left there and went to a different place (Med now) and they were also packed) I just don’t have the energy to sit there for 4-5 hours. Oh, that’s something else……I feel so BAD! Energy level is very low and my head feels so heavy. My ears keep stopping up and I have difficulty breathing (like congestion only in my throat) Last night I tried to eat a rice and chicken casserole i had made and it was like every time I tried to swallow, the food felt as though it was swelling in my throat. So please if you have any clue as to what this may be….answer……besides the obvious of go to the doctor. Thanks…….

A: You need to get in real fast to a gastroenterologist (sp) and get a diagnosis.. That doesn’t sound good. I have that problem and I take generic prilosec (Omeprozole) …If I didn’t take that, I would be in the same boat as you… Reflux will make your throat sore and make you cough. Etc… It could be that you have acid reflux and caught a cold on top of that (which will sap your energy) and give you all those symptoms…

Q: What are the symptoms of a gallbladder going bad?
I have been having problems since at least February and am wondering if it couldbe my gallbladder. I end up having severe pain right under my sternum that shoots through to my back. It seems to vary with what I have eaten or drunk through the day…and mostly happens at night, but has happened during the day. I also have horrible heartburn, feels like some one is sitting on my chest and feel like I could vomit at any moment….any ideas as to what could be going on?

A: gall bladder symptoms:

The symptoms of most types of gallbladder disorders are similar. Pain is usually intense and sudden, starting in the upper right abdomen and radiating to the right shoulder blade. The pain may come and go, and onset is often after a rich meal. Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, fever and chills, and jaundice. See your healthcare provider if you have sharp persistent pain in the abdomen. He or she must rule out other causes that need immediate treatment. For example, the appendix is also on the right side of the abdomen. It is lower than the gallbladder.

Ulcer symptoms(H. Plyori)

Abdominal discomfort is the most common symptom. This discomfort usually

* is a dull, gnawing ache

* comes and goes for several days or weeks

* occurs 2 to 3 hours after a meal

* occurs in the middle of the night (when the stomach is empty)

* is relieved by eating

* is relieved by antacid medications

Other symptoms include

* weight loss

* poor appetite

* bloating

* burping

* nausea

* vomiting

Some people experience only very mild symptoms, or none at all.
Emergency Symptoms

If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away:

* sharp, sudden, persistent stomach pain

* bloody or black stools

* bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

They could be signs of a serious problem, such as

* perforation—when the ulcer burrows through the stomach or duodenal wall

* bleeding—when acid or the ulcer breaks a blood vessel

* obstruction—when the ulcer blocks the path of food trying to leave the stomach

Hiatial Hernia

Typical symptoms are heartburn and belching. One may have a burning taste in the mouth. Sometimes spitting up food occurs when the stomach is full. This may be more common at night. There may be a sense of food being stuck on its way down. This symptom may also be a symptom of esophageal cancer and should be evaluated by your healthcare provider.

the reason I put all of these symptoms down is because sometimes you can be misdiagnosed. I was in fall of ‘99 the doctors said my gallbladder was bad. It turned out after several months of pain and testing I had the H. Polyri ulcer. It was horriable. I was never a small woman but in 4 months I lost 45 lbs and went from size 12 to a size 3. You was also was able to see every bone in my body because I have a large frame. My advice is to go to a doctor fast if you are having any of these symptoms.

Q: Can someone tell me the symptoms of stomach ulcers?
I’m 16, stomach ulcers run in the family. For the last 2-3 weeks, I wake up with a horrible stomach ache. It feels like I’m so hungry that I could get sick. After I eat something, it goes away.

I also have really bad heartburn. I have had this since I was very young. I got an upper GI when I was 11, but nothing showed up.

Can someone please tell me what ALL the symptoms are of a stomach ulcer? Thanks.

A: Generally stomach ulcers show positive for heliobacter pylori or can be caused by overuse of NSAID’s such as ibuprofen.

Stomach ulcers can cause a lot of pain and are often aggrevated by highly acidic foods, such as currys, some fruit juices and alcohol, they can also be soothed by milk and eating generally.

If you do think you have a stomach ulcer, avoid medications such as ibuprofen and asprin because they can cause the ulcer to rupture, also if you ever experience coughing up blood or blood in the stool it is most likely from a perferated ulcer

Q: Why do i get heartburn when i have milk/icecream at night?
whenever i have milk/icecream after about 8 or 9 pm i get very bad heartburn my saliva gets so thick sorry TMI but its so uncomfortable why does this happen, i dont have any other symptoms like naseau or stomach pain just heartburn that hurts :( Never ,ever in the daytime though Why do you think it happens??

A: Hi There,

Fats, protein and calcium present in the milk stimulate acid production in the stomach. Normal diet of milk is fine but don’t take it for treating acid reflux, as is advised by some wise people.Similarly, high fat content in cheese slows down digestion, especially if taken just before going to bed.

Solutions for acid reflux involve making lifestyle changes such as avoiding certain foods, losing weight, and stopping smoking and exercising regularly.

Try to eat 4-5 small meals a day instead of 1-2 large, heavy meals. Do not eat just before going to bed and avoid eating in a hurry. Proper chewing is very important.

In acid reflux, the list of what not to eat is much bigger and specific than what to eat. Certain foods and fluids to avoid are:
• Salad vegetables like onions, radishes and cucumber hard to digest.
• Too much liquid, especially just after the meals, dilutes the digestive juices. Hence, liquids in small quantities should be taken before or during the meals only. A glass of wine on the other hand will aid in digestion.
• Peppermint tea, alcohol and coffee relax the esophagus sphincter thereby aiding in spurring of the backward flow of food from the stomach. Alcohol also causes stomach acidity whereas coffee causes irritation. So, it’s a double whammy for people facing acid reflux.
• Pectin in unripe foods makes them hard to digest whereas high fat content in cheese slows down digestion, especially if taken just before going to bed.
• Fats, protein and calcium present in the milk stimulate acid production in the stomach. Normal diet of milk is fine but don’t take it for treating acid reflux, as is advised by some wise people.
• Chocolate, containing fats and caffeine is also a usual suspect.
• Fizzy drinks expand your stomach having the same effect as that of overeating. Avoid them

Avoid the overuse of over-the-counter medications such as antacids, anti-gas or ant-flatulence drugs, oral suspension and H-2 receptor blockers as they may cause side effects such as constipation and diarrhea.

Try these simple techniques
- Never lie down flat on the bed immediately after the meals.
- Raise the head end of your bed by about 3-4 inches, using bed blocks or bricks. Pillows over pillows won’t help.
- Nicotine increase the amount of gastric acids secreted. It also loosens the valve, i.e., relaxes the sphincter. So, don’t smoke.
- Wear suspenders instead of a belt. This creates less pressure on the stomach.
- Bend on your knees if you are going down. If you bend your stomach, you’ll compress it forcing the acids upwards.
- Try yoga or some form of stress relieving exercises in addition to the herbs mentioned above.

Natural Remedies

Natural and holistic treatments have been used for centuries to treat and provide symptomatic relief for digestive problems. Homeopathic remedies are safe and effective to use for people of all ages without unwanted side effects. Carefully selected ingredients such as Calc phos, Carbo veg, Nat phos, Mag carb and Silicea helps to neutralize acid in the stomach as well as cleanse and eliminate toxins from the body and relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, bloating and gas.

Hope all that helped

Good Luck!

Q: I’ve been having some bad heartburn + unusual dizziness .. ?
For about two months now, I’ve been having this continuous throbbing pain in my chest area which feels a bit like heartburn, but I went to see the doctor & she says there’s nothing wrong at the moment, but I should see a radiologist.
My mom scheduled an appointment for next week because that’s all they had available, but I’ve been feeling really dizzy lately (so bad its hard for me to stand) & im not sure if these two symptoms have anything to do with each other.

If you could please help me that would be really great… thanks :)
(im 12 years old, btw.)

A: Some of this could be related to growing pains (an example only), but the radiologist might be able to help figure out what could be going on.

Another site that might be able to help you find more information is the symptom checker at: http://www.WebMD.com

Q: How common is it for a twin to hide?
I’m 13 weeks pregnant with my second. I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks to date my pregnancy, and at that point it was the typical smudge, not anything that looked like a baby.

However, a lot of my symptoms this time around are much, much worse, and friends are beginning to wonder. One of them had twins last year and said I have the same kind of level of symptoms (hyperemesis, bad heartburn in the 1st trimester, already showing, etc etc)

Just wondering how common it is for a twin to hide until later on when they’re bigger. I’m not sure for another u/s until my second trimester.

A: i had an ultrasound with my last pregnancy at 16 weeks(first appointment) and was told there was only one baby, 3 weeks later i had another ultrasound(second trimester) at the end of this ultrasound the tech was checking the gender and found the twin.

my symptoms however were not any worse than my other pregnancies. the only things i noticed was a bit more movement than with my singles.

Q: Is heartburn an early pregnancy symptom?
I have been having really bad heartburn for the past week now, I am expecting my period in 6 days… just wondering if heartburn can start this early in pregnancy?

A: I have heard it’s possible! Not sure but I am going through the same thing right now, since 8dpo i have been having horrible heartburn! Its so acidic, i feel a little nauseous when it flares up too! I’m currently at 10dpo and it’s only gotten worse. Hope you feel better and get a positive on a pregnancy test if that is what you want!

Q: what are my causes of long term cold and heartburn?
I have had a heavy cold now for 3 weeks, along with it i have bad heartburn and bad stomache. Although the answers iv had have been helpful but i now feel as though all these symptoms could be related and if so, has anybody else suffered with this? i live in wales and have no pets or allergies that i know of. my flat is clean and tidy i have been there a year and never really get ill with colds and that. Please let me know your suggestions. Cheers guys! x

A: If your cold lasted 3 weeks that is not normal. Please go to the emergency room or schedule a doctors appointment. You need some anti-biotics or other medicine to heal what is wrong because you definitely are sick sweet heart.

Q: is it normal to have on/off symptoms?
i am on b/c. BUT. when we baby danced i was on two different medications. thats was 4 weeks ago now. for the past 2 and half weeks i started getting bad symptoms of heartburn and boob pain. after that i got bloated up like never before. then my appetite went. then it came back but weird. like all i want is fruit smoothies and cold juice. and cheeze itz. ok well starting two days ago my boobs sorness started to go away. it quit hurting. now its jsut twinges of pains going through it throughout the day. but they dont feel as heavy.still swollen though. do you think i got preg.? did you have on and off symptoms? when can i test cuz i bought and took two tests and they were neg. but that was over a week ago. when should i test again? af due in one week. but i dunno if i can wait. i have the first response test waiting.

A: I’m in the exact same situation, and have to wait a week to test too. We have no choice but to wait! Ugh!!

Q: Is it good to drink Ginger Ale with an upset stomach?
I have been having acid reflux symptoms, like bad heartburn and nausea. The doctor told me to avoid anything with citric acid in it, or anything spicy. My 16 yr. old brother told me that people with an upset stomach are recommended to drink Ginger Ale. The third ingredient is citric acid, so I’m not sure if its ok.

A: Ginger ale would not be recommended for acid reflux, because of the citric acid as you said. The reason ginger ale is recommended for upset stomach is because of the ginger(which most commercial ginger ales do not contain)
You can get a ginger tea to drink. Most stores sell it in tea bags (which contain other ingredients also)or if you have any Asian food stores near you, they should have a ginger drink mix that is ginger and sweetener. You just add it to hot water. You can also make your own by peeling some ginger root and steeping it in hot water for about 10 minutes. You can then add some honey, sugar or sugar substitute to sweeten it.
Another ginger option is ginger candies. They come in chews and hard candy. If none are sold in stores near you then you can order them on-line from http://www.gingerpeople.com The site has tons of other real ginger drinks, foods and sauces, as well as more information on the benefits of ginger.
Or you can always get some pickled ginger and just eat a slice when needed. Most supermarkets have it in the Asian food section.
