Q: strange symptoms, severe heartburn, white tongue, burning chest?
My husband is an alcoholic. Three days ago he started to have really strange symptoms. At first he had hiccups for two days, then severe heartburn, to the point that he can’t eat or drink anything but water, and now is tongue is completely white. Please help. I want to help him feel better but I have no clue what I should do. He also has an ulcer.

A: It sounds like he’s suffering the ill effects of the alcohol abuse. What you’re describing is a rather nasty case of gastric reflux. If left alone he risks developing ulcers of the esophagus, that is if he hasn’t already. Likely the ulcer he already has [presumably in the stomach] is a result of the alcohol.

He truly needs to get some help and control of his alcoholism, but in the mean time I’d recommend having him see his doctor, who could prescribe something like NEXIUM to help with the gastric reflux.

Good luck!

Q: Is it normal to have severe heartburn in the early stages of pregnancy?
I have a feeling that i may be pregnant but just haven’t got round to taking a test yet. I have suffered severe heartburn, dizziness and slight nausea in the past 4 days. I know that nausea is a common pregnancy symptom, but it is normal to have heartburn this early on in pregnancy? I would be two weeks maximum! Any advise would be gratefully received!!

A: This is common. Take either Zantac or Prilosec once a day. Then use Tums (chewable calcium tabs) for breakthrough heartburn. All these meds are OTC and fine to take while pregnant.

Q: Severe Pregnancy symptoms but just started a “period”, is pregnancy still a likely culprit for the symptoms?
I have 1 child who is now 4. With that pregnancy, I had almost no symptoms except really bad headaches and fatigue. I had sex during ovulation and started showing classic signs of pregnancy. Extreme nausea, dull backaches, extreme fatigue, food cravings, heartburn, severe mood swings, cramping, tinges in my breasts and nipple sensitivity. My fiance and dad 2 my 4yr old just knew there was a baby.

I had these symptoms for about two weeks and then my period came on yesterday. The flow was alot lighter than normal for the first day and was bright red in color ( usually starts off rather dark) but heavier today with many small clots ( also ususal) and still bright red.

These arent my normal pre-menstral/menstral symptoms. One day 1 of the bleeding I was really weak and very crampy. This is day 2 of the bleeding and the pregnancy symptoms continue, the nausea especially. I took a test last week which was neg but there many not have been enough HcG to tell so soon.

Any thoughts

A: I have 3 grown children, and with all of my pregnancies I had a period. So it is possible that you can be pregnant. But when you say that you’re passing clots that could also mean that you had a miscarriage. I suggest that you re-visit you gynecologist and let him/her examine you and or run tests. But I wish you all the luck with your outcome.

Q: Can severe heartburn or acid reflux cause vocal cord damage?
I have had severe acid reflux for the past week and now my voice is becoming hoarse. Is there a relation between these two symptoms.

A: Yes, reflux can cause your voice to be hoarse, try Prilosec. I take 20 mg twice a day. You might want to start out with 20 mg once a day. Also, you should talk to your doctor about this. Do you know what is triggering the reflux? Stay away from alcohol, don’t smoke anything, sometimes tomatoes and tomatoe products can aggravate reflux. Anything high in acid can aggravate the reflux. Try to keep track of what you are eating and change your diet accordingly.

Q: Severe heartburn? Help!!!!!?
I have been having severe heartburn since my pregnancy 6 months ago. I went to a GI doctor several times. He tried several different heartburn medications and none have helped. He did an endoscopy and said he saw no damage or anything abnormal. I’m still having the symptoms and it’s to the point where I can only eat bland foods. I went to my internist and had many tests and nothing is abnormal. I even had my heart check and it is fine. I’m hesitant to go back to the GI doctor because I don’t want him to think I’m crazy or faking, since nothing has helped and nothing was abnormal in my tests. I feel like I can’t continue like this and I’m afraid there is nothing anyone can do. Has anyone experienced anything like this or know what this could be?

A: Yes I’ve had that for a couple of years now. First of all try to google acid/alkaline diet. There are some web sites that tell you what foods to eat to make your body more alkaline. That will help stop your acid. If you’re having heartburn now try sipping some water with lemon in it. Water alone will aggravate the acid stomach. Take a tablespoon of honey or more if you need. It’s very alkaline. The foods that you should be eating are fruits, even citrus is ok, vegetables, whole grains, honey, soy products, lots of corn, avocados. Avoid meat, chicken, eggs, coffee, soda, fish, tea, vinegar, bean, flour based products. Sorry the list is long of foods that are acid in your body. When you buy bread, buy whole wheat. Or whole wheat tortillas. They’re good. I had acid problems so bad I thought I was a goner, so to speak. But you can heal yourself with the right foods. I did it myself, and feel so much better. Now I can eat pretty much anything. Also, it’s very helpful if you get the ph test strips. That way you know when you’re body is alkaline verses too acidic. You can get the strips at a health food store. Hope this was of some help to you.

Q: Heartburn-like symptoms?
I’m 46, in good shape, not overweight, with no historry of digestive or heart disease or cancer in my family.

For several months, and increasingly in the last 2 months, I’ve had what feels a lot like heartburn/acid-reflux. About 5 weeks ago, I had a pain in my chest so bad around the esophagal/heart area it felt like I was having a heart attack!

I don’t think it’s heart-related, but I’m just saying, the pain was that severe.

I saw a family physician twice the last week of August, and he put me on nexium, for 30 days, which I just ceased taking at his recommendation, 3 days ago).
Nexium LIMITED the pain, but did not eliminate it. I still had a dull ache around the esophagal area, although lessened by Nexium. My Dr said if it was acid reflux, that would definitely have eliminated it, so that eliminates that. He also tested me for the bacteria that causes ulcers, and I tested negative for that.

I didn’t like taking nexium, it made me feel like I was on the edge of being incontinent, and I had loose bowel movements and headaches the whole month I was on it.
My doctor initially had me on Nexium for 2 months, but said if it wasn’t helping after 30 days, I might as well discontinue it.

My Dr also gave me an EKG to test for potential heart problems, and that showed no signs of heart trouble.

He also did bloodwork, and the only bad sign was my cholesterol was 238, which he advised me to get down, and I’ve almost completely given up meat and dairy to make an immediate improvement in that.

I’m 5′ 11″, 180 lbs, in good shape, with no physical problems otherwise.
I usually feel indigestion and chest pain/acid-reflux-like symptoms 2 to 3 hours after I eat, and often releive the pain/pressure by pressing on points of my upper pectoralis muscles, and burping (as quietly as I can). I think it could possibly just be gas pain, but it seems my esophagus or something else is inflamed.
I burp, quietly, sometimes 100, 200 or more times. And I don’t want to, but it seems to be the only thing that releives the pressure and pain, at least partially. Sometimes I press on my pectoralis points till my chest is black and blue (although not often) to releive the pressure.
I work as a massage therapist, and so have a very physical job. I’m in discomfort, but –so far— it does not impair my ability to work. Although sometimes I’m at the upper threshold of pain I can comfortably work with.
It often helps me to work rather than sit at my desk, because then I’m flexing my chest muscles, and that relieves and stretches it.

I also feel frequent itching/irritation around my tonsils and the back of my throat, possibly related to irritation of my esophagus.
I’ve never felt nausea, vomiting or vomiting blood, which I’ve seen are symptoms of esophagal cancer. My doctor says based on what he’s seen so far, he doesn’t think it’s heart disease or any kind of cancer. But this ongoing inflammation can’t be good.

The only other health problem I have is mild allergies, although I’m extremely allergic to mold, and that can irritate my throat and make it burn, especially when air conditioning first comes on and kicks up dust in the vents. And when I’m outside near a canal or other place where mold grows abundantly. But that is largely controllable.

I’m concerned because the chest pain has kicked up considerably in the last 6 weeks.

I’m also currently uninsured, although I make about 30,000 annually and can for the first time in my life afford insurance. I’m concerned if I see a gastro-enterologist, he’ll just say “Sorry, nothing I can do, 300 dollars please”.
Or if it is a serious medical condition, they’ll deny me coverage and say it’s a pre-existing condition.
I also have no idea how to find a good insurance provider.

Please advise me, what you think it is, and how it can be treated and eliminated. Thank you !
The most persistent symptom is chest pain, centered around the third rib, just to the left of my sternum, and tightness in my chest muscles on the same point and 2-inch radius around it.

For maybe a year, I only felt it after I ate, about 2 to 3 hours after eating. But the last 5 weeks, I feel it pretty much from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep, more inflamed when I eat.
I notice no symptoms of fatigue or sweating to indicate heart problems. And again, I had an EKG 1 month ago that indicated no heart problems.

A: Possibly a hiatal hernia. Please check your local area for free clinics, or go to your church and ask for help. Often they can assist.

Q: What could these symptoms mean? Anyone have any suggestions?
Hi. Okay, so I’m having some major health issues right now. I feel awful, but have no health insurance, and am basically grasping at straws at this point to find out what my problem is. I’m hoping to NOT have to go to the ER for this, but if this could be something serious, I’d definitely go rather than risking future health.
Here’s my symptoms:
*Severe (and I mean SEVERE heartburn). Feels like it’s coming up to the base of my throat. Hurts like no other. Doesn’t matter what I eat or drink, it just is there.
*Antacids do not work. I’ve tried Prilosec, Zantac, Pepcid, Rolaids, Tums, pretty much, you name it, I’ve taken it. I get minimal relief and then it’s right back to searing pain, and it does wake me up in the middle of the night.
*Along with this, I’ve had horrible nausea, which is about enough to make me want to scream.
*My stomach feels distended. Pressure on any part of my stomach just hurts like no other, and I feel like I’ve eaten a 10 course meal at any time during the day whether I eat or not. It’s horrible.
*I have a stabbing/sharp pain just under my rib cage on the left side, basically between the middle of my stomach and my side. It can make me double over in pain if I eat anything.
*I feel almost constipated, but my bowels have been fairly normal.
*I’m not pregnant or taking any medications (other than Tylenol LOTS OF TYLENOL for the stomach pain)
*In the last 3 days, I’ve developed a cough out of nowhere. My nose has been a bit stuffy because of allergies, and I don’t necessarily think I am getting a cold or anything like that.

Okay, so if anyone out there has had similar symptoms or anything like that, or has any suggestions as to what could be causing this…please let me know. I’ve done about everything I can think of, besides actually going to the ER, but that’s my next step. This is horrible!

Thanks!!!

A: It very well could be GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease. The muscle that is located between the stomach & esophagus is lax & allows stomach acid & contents to backwash into the tender esophagus where it can (will) erode the tissue & the stomach, trying to compensate for the acid going up the esophagua , starts growing it’s cells into the esophagus, as stomach cells are hardier than esophageal cells because they are made to deal with the acid…..but your esophagus isn’t.So, the body automatically tries to help out. It can lead to a pre-cancerous condition called “Barretts Esophagus” which I have. It can also progress to cancer which doesn’t have a very high cure rate. My daughters old boyfriend ignored the warnings, the ones you seem to have & never went to a doctor, just drank Maalox & lived on Tums & died at 31 of esophageal cancer.Never smoked, never had a drop of alcohol or caffeine in his life. Those things make reflux worse, so if you are indulging in any of those behaviors, STOP immediately. It’s hard….but dying is harder. Another of my daughters’ has (had) Barretts & she has been taking enzymes & drinking an aloe vera concoction from our health food store. Her last gastroscopy( camera down) showed no signs of Barretts@ Good LUck, But start doing something,ok?

Q: Need your advice regards heartburn please??
During the last couple of weeks I have had about 3 severe heartburn episodes, my symptoms are, the pain starts below the rib cage then spreads right over my chest, it is so painful that I double up ,it also makes my jaw and teeth ache, I have a high pain threshold but this last one actually made me cry, it was an intense dull ache, what do you think?? I took 6 antacid pills and it went away it usually lasts about 5/8 mins. Thanks so much for your help.

A: your going to think I’m crazy, but peel a potato, and eat it (raw), one of those remedies, but it actually works. that work for instant relief, but the way you talk, you might have an ulcer, or something going on with your esophagus. call the doc

yeah i know people say use antacids, but technically your usally not to exceed a certain # of mg/day. if your having symptoms every 5-8min, the potato might work until the dr appointment comes.

Q: what are some disease related to these symptoms?
every time it is hot, I always get severe heartburn, migraines, and dizziness. I also have brown spots that look like bunched birth marks but they come and go and my cough has gotten worst, my lungs hurt when I cough now. Sometimes my headaches only come when I am standing up and go after I lay down. what are some diseases related to this and what can I do about it? I asked my doctor but I just want ideas about what it is.

A: Heartburn can be sign of gastric problems, maybe you should drink more water when the weather is hot. Take care of what you eat as you`re having a bad cough. Hope you are taking your medications.

Q: question on pregnancy symptoms?
my wife is about a week away from being 4 months pregnant. she has really been having some severe symptoms and im concerned. she had her blood work done and papsmere and all was fine. i think she has been through every symptom in the book with this child. this is our 2nd kid and i know for a fact she wasn’t this bad with our first child. right now shes having heartburn, severe fatigue / tiredness, gas / bloating, constipation and just looks really drawn to me. she says shes fine but all she does anymore is sleep. this kid is really kicking her butt. i know shes taking a prenatal vitamin but im not sure if it’s helping. i need advice from a nurse or doctor on here to see if this stuff is normal or not ?

A: I’m not a doctor or nurse, but trust me, this is in the range of normal. Every pregnancy is different, so it’s not really a problem that her last pregnancy seemed easier. She also presumably has another child to take care of, which will contribute to her appearance of tiredness (since she’s likely not getting as much rest as last time around). She’ll probably feel a bit better pretty soon. Those early months are really hard on your body as there are LOTS of things going on, even though you can’t see it yet. If she says she’s fine, she probably is! Just try to help out with as many things as you can so she can get the extra rest she needs to grow this new wonderful little baby!

Q: Did your pregnancy symptoms differ carrying a boy/girl?
Just Curious
I’m currently 30 weeks and 5 days pregnant and have had morning sickness throughout the whole pregnancy and i am still experiencing it everyday. Also ive had severe heartburn. I’m having a girl.

A: I’ve not had any sickness at all in either of my pregnancies- first was my daughter, this one a boy. My gran the same in 3 pregnancies (2 boys, 1 girl). My mum felt sick will all three of us, but it lasted longer with me and I was the only one she was physically sick in!

Severe mornign sickness, Hyperemis Gavardium (spelled very wrong sorry) is a lot more common in women carrying girls. There does seem to be some truth in it, but it certainly wasn’t for me!

Q: 38 weeks & severe heartburn?
im 38 weeks and 3 days pregnant im experiencing really bad heartburn everyday that it feels like if im on fire i cant even breathe good i been had this symptom but now is getting worser.. also i been having some pains in my upper thigh around my private part everytime im sleeping and get up it really hurts so bad it happens everyday..also do sex induces labor?

A: i have been having the same thing for the past 2 weeks. i have been on prilosec. and it seems to help out. i am 40 weeks today, and it been really bad for me the past week. but i have been forgetting to take my pill…but as long as i take one a day, it does help. and if you talk to your doctor there is a generic version of it that’s over the counter and way cheaper.

Q: Severe and chronic abdominal symptoms? HELP!!?
This is my history of my illness. If ANYBODY can help I would greatly appreciate it!!

When I began my period it was regular but heavy. I was in 7th grade.

In 8th grade it continued and I had frequent infections. In December I had a sinus infection. January strep throat. February viral throat infection. March sinus infection. April viral throat infection. May sinus infection.

In 9th grade I had 1 or 2 sinus infections. My periods became irregular and eventually stopped when I lost weight due to anorexia, depression, and anxiety.

In 10th grade I had complications from my anorexia. I had bradicardia, postural orthostatic tachecardia, low alkaline phosphotase, and 2 other electrolytes. I was in the hospital twice and it saved my life. I devloped insomnia also and was put on many medications, constantly switching.

I’ve been on zofoft, zyprexa, effexor, cymbalta, prostiq, wellbitrin, and revia (for cutting).

Then I developed bulimia. I developed ovarian cysts (4 of them seperatly, one he size of a lemon) and stopped my bulimia because of the pain.

The next year (this year) in 11th grade I developed off and on severe abdominal pain. Every time they found or assumed I had small cysts on my ovaries. Then I developed a severe case of he flu. I was vomiting, had intense stomach pains, fever, headache, fatigue, etc. After that the abdominal symptoms would not go away. I had chronic abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting along with constipation and diarrhea.

They said I had a bad case of gastroenteritis. I went into the hospital for my depression which was torure on top of that. I was diagnosed with PTSD. I then went on Prozac, klonopin, abilify, seroquel, and anaspaz and phenergan to control my symptoms. I also had off and on fevers and continued to have sharp and stabbing pain.

Then they did a colonoscopy and endoscopy to find nothing except I was lactose intollerant. I cut out lactose and still have symptoms. Over that time I lost 40 lbs unintentionally this time. There were days where I couldn’t get a bite in me! So they gave me and ng tube.

I gained 10 lbs in 2 months and they took it out because at that point I had tons of heartburn and vomiting. I tried prilosec, pepcid, prevacid, and something for an ulcer with no relief.

I had a gastric emptying test which shows delayed gastric emptying. I am now on bethanechol and prevacid for that. Currently they think I’m having abdominal intestinal spasms which hurt so bad and they won’t let me take pain meds. I have a moderate fever, left side pain below my bellybutton, severe fatigue and weakness to the point where Im about to colapse.

I don’t know what else to do! I feel miserable!

Oh and I’ve been on yaz, lo ovral, depo provera, and now seasonique for my period, always with a month of breakthrough bleeding.
Recent blood tests, ct scan, ultrasound, and urine were normal besides excess protein.

Recently had strep throat also.

A: I have no idea. But I want you to know that I feel bad for all that you have to go through. My best to you and I hope you get some answers soon. And some relief.

Q: Gallbladder infection during pregnancy?
I am 35 weeks pregnant and have been suffering with gallbladder symptoms( severe heartburn, burning in the ribs, and loss of appetite) doc told me to take zantac.. I have for 2 weeks , and my symptoms are worse.. the last two nights I have had heartburn and indigestion so bad I was dry heving.. today I started experince high abdominal pressure.. not in a specific area,, nausea, dizziness, and lightheadedness.. I just want to know if anyone else has had gallbladder problems … pregnant or not! I dont want to call the doc and sound stupid… and it doesnt make me feel any better that my husband thinks it is in my head.. any advice?

A: The symptoms you are describing are common for women as far along in thier pregnancy as you are. If you think about it you must know that there is alot of pressure on your abdominal organs and the baby is taking up alot of space. So you will experience symptoms of ‘reflux’. Did your healthcare provider call it gallbladder symptoms? It sounds more like ‘reflux’. Eat very frequent small meals and don’t lay down after eating. Avoid spicy things. The last month of pregnancy is uncomfortable for all pregnant women. But alot of us survived just fine. Take your zantac…eat small ect. It will be over soon enough.
